In roads being made by the bean counters in the States and Provinces,Harness Racing has one last shot to save itself. I think drivers and trainers are not the ones to ask,they are the ones to be told what they are going to do. They just want the money now, they are like many people on commissions ,they need to make it now,10 years? What do they care? They will be selling cars. Unless,unless ..they act like they care.
Obvious #1, every participant joins a regional Harness Racing association,like New England association, New York Metro area, Delaware/Maryland area, Ontario, Chicago/Indiana, Ohio/Michigan etc,etc. If they dont wish to join they are free to race at non member tracks. These associations negotiate the race dates and race nights, they reduce race dates(dont worry purses go up) and they dont compete with each other, Ontario does not run 5 tracks at once , 3 maybe? Codes of conduct are enforced as if they were responsible parties,effecting the wagers that are being made on these people. You race here ,you follow a code of conduct,with personal drug use,efforts, and racing rules.
Obvious #2 regulate race bikes/equipment, drug use once these horses are in training for any association trainer ,they follow strict rules that "base line" the cell counts of each horse and only allow a certain percentage deviation. They become trasparent with information, complete with trainer intentions,ALL equipment changes(ie race bikes), make trackus mandatory for qualifiers, and races.
Obvious #3- Share the betting takeouts,so that simo money is spread evenly. open your own ADW,its a free country.
REDUCE THE TAKEOUTS!!!STUPID!!!
Enhance pools, seed pools to draw wagers,if we are sharing money ,it wont matter where it comes from, purse money will be used to enhance and seed these pools (unless they are only worried about profits today), raise the handles and the takeouts will grow. (Ie on seeding, a 10% take out on the 10th race exacta every Friday night at the BigM, dont just guarantee it, seed it with $50,000, like prize money, hit that exacta maybe you win $300,how much do you think would be bet into that pool? ). Somebody needs to get creative , NOW! Try everything once, stop worrying about todays bottom line, there will be no bottom line tomorrow. How many people play lottery tickets with out any other input (like handicapping),they rely on luck, same with slot handle pullers, lets give our new handle pullers something to shoot at, computer generated multirace tickets,with carryovers,make the newspaper by making someone rich! Besides we with be returning 90% to our patrons,every night!!!!
