Re-framing what is in the article, imagine that the Foldit players are the betting public at large -- their collaboration is what sets the odds. The smaller individuals or groups of bettors making a serious effort to profit are like the scientists, and THE PUBLIC IS OUTPERFORMING THEM. So we do have collaboration of sorts (to handicap the race and set the odds), but now you want to create a smaller collaboration that somehow has to be smarter than the much bigger one that is the whole public. Tough game.

I am not sure of the connection to Orwell's novel but what we are discussing here is a form of a "Prediction Market."
