Interesting race, the winner pushed early (in the fastest quarter) to get good position while the place horse trailed until the stretch where he made up several lengths (in the slowest quarter). I think Daddy Nose Best ran the better race with a 92-95 Beyer guess.

Also note the positive splits, each quarter time was slower than the previous quarter.

I see these horses in the Bluegrass and not the Derby.

23.31...47.57...1:12.28...1:38.07...1:50.46

23.31....24.26....24.71....25.79....12.39

I was most impressed with the ride from Leparoux!

I bet the 7 and couldn't figure why Nakatani was going head to head with that 90/1 shot..I thought maybe they were going slow but I guess they weren't..seems to me that HM got caught up in a speed duel in the Cash Call also...I guess they are determined to go to the front with him..

Handsome Mike held on fairly well considering, might be a good price next outing.

Everytime I read about El Camino Derby a picture of 1980's pickups racing pops into my head. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Now back to real topic of this thread.

Who was the last horse to win the ECR Derby that had an impact in the Triple Crown series?

Tabasco Cat is the most recent one that I can recall back in '94.
Damn horse nearly killed Jeff Lukas, too.......

Considering where it ran and who it ran against, I'd say the owners ducked out against many better horses in S. Cal. They shopped this horse around for a soft win. Don't think it has the ability to compete with the likes of Out of bounds in S. Cal.

Cavonnier won in 1996, Charismatic was second in 1999.

No, he's a grass or synthetic horse at this point of his career so It's more apples to oranges.
