Last Thursday the LA Times published a column from Bill Dwyre on Mike Smith approaching his 5000th win (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0209-dwyre-20120209,0,2019777.column?page=2). If everything goes well he will get his 5000th before the end of Santa Anita's meet.

This got me to thinking, who else is near this milestone (http://www.equibase.com/stats/View.cfm?tf=all-time&tb=jockey&vb=W)?

Of active riders (and assuming no injury causes a hiccup) I see four who might be considered in range of that goal this year. With their current total and looking at their three year average (minus actual 2012 wins)

Wins + 3 yr = EOY
4930 + 121 = 5051 Calvin Borel
4920 + 094 = 5014 Alex Solis
4720 + 191 = 4951 John Velazquez
4675 + 319 = 4994 Ramon Dominguez

Again barring injury, Borel and Solis seem likely to reach 5000 this year. Velazquez seems less likely. He would have to win like he did from 2001-2004, but it's possible. Dominguez? I'll go out on a limb and say he gets those 6 extra wins and breaks the barrier in December at Aqueduct.

At a higher level, Perry Wayne Ouzts (5814+205=6019) looks poised to get 6000th (knock wood) before the year's end.

Interesting.
I read somewhere Calvin was not a very good jock.
Guess you can't believe what you read on the internet.

What does Russell Baze have by now, 142,000? I don't consider him anything special outside of NoCal.

Hall of Famer Russell Baze (http://www.racingmuseum.org/hall-of-fame/horse-jockeys-view.asp?varID=77) has 11,479 wins through Feb. 13th. At his current rate he should pass 12,000 in 2013.

What counts other than a win?

Surely you realize I was being sarcastic for dramatic effect.

You're just saying that because you're the Russell Baze of posters around here.

(I think I just put you on a couple of more winners with this one...you're welcome.)

Is a post a 'start' or a 'win'? I'd say 'start,' there are plenty of posts that aren't winners.

Oops, maybe I spoke too soon.

Jockey Julien Leparoux, who has won nine riding titles at Churchill Downs and six at Keeneland since 2006, is moving his tack to New York after Kentucky Derby Week this spring.

You think Leparoux is going to come and eat Dominguez' bread in NY ??

Ramon needs 320 more wins to reach 5000. Does Julien really need to "eat Dominguez's bread" to get enough wins to prevent that from happening before Dec. 31st?
