Can't see how they catch the Pletcher horse.
~
At the Gulfstream Park website Pletcher gives a short interview regarding the :3:. Says the horse is moving forward in his works, but he also gives the caveat that going from a MSW to a G2 is "ambitious." No doubt. The horse isn't battle tested and therein lies his vulnerability. If the :2: or the :5: go with him early, and I don't think they have a choice, then I think the :1: horse has a shot at it. The :1: took a tough bump at the break back at Saratoga, almost hitting the fence, got some time off and lighter conditions and appears to have snapped back - ran two races in less than seven days - his last race and a jock switch appears to make him second best. Nevertheless, gotta shake my head and wonder how they beat the :3:.

Pletcher wins everything.

Looking forward to seein' how the track is playin' and what running style is favored by the conditions.

Make that High Cotton as sire of Tarpy's Goal.

I liked Ever So Lucky last year but almost three months off and according to the trainer a subpar workout on Monday how do you bet him at low odds?

Thunder Moccasin, If ESL scratches TM is probably odds-on, pass on him.

That leaves Tarpy's Goal and II Villano to upset the obvious
favorites.

When looking at the Derby preps, I am reminded of my experiences handicapping QH trials. A lot of times the horses with the best qualifying times did not do anything in the Futurity. There was one a big name QH came in to qualify for Prairie Meadows GrIII QH event, the name of the race escapes me. The horse ran 3rd in the qualifier at 1-5 and barely made the main event. Off at 2-1 in the big race he won by 2 lengths (huge by QH standards). In the qualifier all he had to do was make the race, saving energy for the big race. That horse was SLM Big Daddy Champion of Champions winner 2yrs in a row. I learned to take each race when there is an end goal in mind and look for value accordingly. Look for the horse that has to win to move forward vs the horse that needs the out to move on.

I'll take the :1: at 10/1. Il Villano and Thunder keep eachother too honest in this one.
