The Sam F. Davis is the major prep for the Tampa Derby which comes up in March and a field of eleven runners has been drawn for the Grade 3 $250,000 event at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday afternoon. The group is largely made up of lightly raced and up and coming runners who are looking to cement their status as potential Triple Crown runners.
State of Play is a Grade 2 winner by virtue of taking the With Anticipation Stakes last summer at Saratoga before a disastrous 12th place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Alan Garcia will be aboard for trainer Graham Motion. Prospective is the up and coming local runner as he comes off a nice win in the Pasco Stakes over the Tampa surface last time out for trainer Mark Casse. Reveron comes into the Sam F. Davis with three straight wins including a win in the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year's Day.
