I watched the east-coast show. Good show but I do not see this show being good for racing.

True that...unfortunately

You might be right, but racing is so desperate, it might be worth a chance. Most people think it is so crooked, I don't think it will hurt much.

I said it months ago..."Luck" will be for horse racing what the show "Tilt" was for poker.

An inside view into the corruption in the game that will infuriate the industry so much...the plug will be pulled on the show after its initial season.

A realistic look at horseracing would not have those guys alive with all in the last leg. :)

after watching it twice it dawned on me that regardless of how accurate it is or not, it doesn't matter....we don't have anything on the teevee other than Luck that is racing focused.....and for that, i like it....anything is better'n nothing

and, it ain't exactly "bad" so far

An inside view into the corruption in the game that will infuriate the industry so much...the plug will be pulled on the show after its initial season.Already been renewed for a second season. It seems any publicity is good publicity, especially when gambling is involved. In movies like Oceans 11, the boss of the casino is portrayed as a murderous thug -- a real casino, the Bellagio. Lots of movies like that. And I'm sure Santa Anita was well-aware of what they were getting when they agreed to let them shoot there, and are quite happy about it. (Just like any location or city is happy to have films shoot there, no matter if you portray that very place as a crime-ridden cesspool.) I'm not sure who would be pulling the plug on them -- the "industry" as we talk about it doesn't actually exist -- there is no governing body that could stop them, and if party A tried to stop party B from getting some of that HBO money, there would be hell to pay for party A. (Do you think the jockeys that work in minor parts and as extras would take kindly to someone telling them they can't do that work because it makes the industry look bad? Didn't I see Chantal Sutherland working a horse in the last episode? I'm sure we will see some more of her.)

But will anyone watch the show and decide to go to track because of it?
I don't see this series as being any kind of a draw to the track.

I don't see this series as being any kind of a draw to the track.

Four chuckleheads with no real apparent brilliant strategy won a lottery jackpot style pot in episode one.

I don't think there is much of anything that any television/movie production can ever do to give people what they want to "bolster the industry", but if four dunderheads splitting up a multi-million dollar pot can't do it...

I don't see this series as being any kind of a draw to the track.Just the fact that it is on the air, yes of course it will draw some that are already curious just because it will keep it on their mind. Are there people that were getting ready to go to the track but will decide not to after seeing Luck? I doubt it. Will it make someone with no interest whatsoever suddenly want to go handicap horses? No. At worst it is a wash, and of course the point of the show is to be a show, not to be horse racing PR...

I don't think most people are exposed to the sport and have no idea why people even bother going to a racetrack. This show exposes the gambling aspects - good or bad - in a setting like Santa Anita's while thrilling to thunder of the horses in full gallop. If that is bad PR for racing, the sport truly is in trouble.

I watched Saving Private Ryan, but I didn't get the urge to enlist.

Good point for sure. But at least you found out why you didn't want to enlist.

LUCK was made for ratings, not for exposure for the sport

not sure if they think it's a ratings success or not, but filming for season 2 is underway

Episode 4 tonight was the best one yet. The depiction of the race with Nolte's horse had a decent musical backdrop and used cutaways to what all the characters were involved in. I thought this was well done. Pacing problems not evident and I could (mostly) hear what the characters were saying.

Well, took a buddy of mine to THE ROCK yesterday to have a cigar a beer and "bet some races". He called me out of the blue and asked me if I was going. He knew I go there for a cigar now and then. When we were there he told me he has been watching "Luck" and he remembered going to the track a long time ago and having a good time. We had a few laughs, lost some money, but I believe he will be back. So, at least for one day "Luck" got someone out of their comfort zone to try something new.

Around 1986 the movie "The Color of Money" came out. That built a wave of pool players that lasted about 20 years (pool is basically dead again....). I owned a pool room for about 10-11 years of that time and it was great for awhile. Hopefully "Luck" can be a catalyst. It certainly will be in New Hampshire if they finally vote for casino gambling and The Rock starts live racing again.
