IMPORTANT NOTES

1. Check out the TEAM SIGN-UP thread so you know exactly who is on your team.

2. Communicate with your teammates to arrive at your concensus selections for the contest.

3. Only one post allowed per team. Appoint one player to post on behalf of the entire team. All eight races must be posted at the same time.

4. Coupled entries are considered one betting interest.

5. Once posts are made they may not be changed or edited.

6. Posts must be made one full minute prior to the official DRF "off time".

7. Teams that fail to post on time will only be scored on races run one full minute after their post.

8. All games this season will be scored as "open competitions" with no Divisional matchups.

9. Two options for posting selections:

3 Selection Method
3 7 4 (12 8) top 3 picks with the alternates being 12 & 8 in that order. Team would receive $6.00 payouts for #3; $4.00 payouts for #7; and $2.00 payouts for #4 for Win/Place/Show (assuming no scratches)
Team would receive $3.00 Exacta Box Payout using #3, #7 & #4

2 Selection Method
3 3 7 (4 12) top 2 picks with the alternates being 4 & 12 in that order.
Team would receive $6.00 payouts for #3; $4.00 payouts for #3; and $2.00 payouts for #7 for Win/Place/Show (assuming no scratches)
Team would receive 4 x $3.00 Exacta Ticket with 3-7
and 2 x $3.00 Exacta Ticket with 7-3

Is it possible to get a little more balance in the race types played? In the first 30 races selected and depending on whether you consider 7.5 on turf a sprint or route, we will have had 18 turf routes, 2 turf sprints, 7 dirt sprints and only 3 dirt routes.

This can't all be just because of races where free PPs are offered, is it?

Regards

According to my post #13 which I bump fro Jay Trotter, we apparently have races out of event order.

According to the GapList whichis the track's local time and is all I have to go by for Santa Anita Post times... Event 8 Gulfstream #11 will be all done with before Events 7 Santa Anita is set to go off.

Am correct in my thinking ??????

Nice picks parshooter....hopefully the TURF races will stay on the TURF.

So you're saying that the event order as parshooter originally posted it is correct?

According to Equibase, the sixth at Santa Anita goes off at 2:30 Pacific 5:30 Eastern, while the eleventh from Gulfstream goes off at 2:50 Pacific 5:50 Eastern...so yup, at least as far as that goes, all seems correct.

Have you noticed something?

Most days Race 6 at Santa Anita goes off at 3:36 Pacific and 6:36 Eastern.
I haven't seen Saturday's DRF times yet to confirm that.

Yes ..you are correct. I flubbed up by not looking at Santa Anita at all because Brisnet does not have the entries until later today..I see now that Santa Anita is starting at noon their time instead of 1:00PM this Saturday.

My Bad.... Sorry

EVENT ORDER that parshooter originally posted is correct.

I am going back into my hole now. :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

No, I just wanted to clarify what you meant when you said that all the Equibase times "appeared fine", as that related to the order of events originally posted by parshooter. (I think that LAP_520's subsequent post has established that parshooter's original order was correct.)

That the original order of parshooter is correct bears repeating.
(Santa Anita is likely running earlier to accommodate Saturday's Sunshine Millions.)

I deleted my original question...re ruling on placement of alternate horse when a horse is scratched from the first three.

Thanks PA for response to question........

now my team has two scratches in event 8 ..so now I know where to install the alternates according to your answer.

PaceAdvantage

Yes, I believe I gave you the correct answer...everyone just moves up a spot...

If you had 9-3-4 (1-5) and the 3 scratches, you have 9-4-1 (5)

If the 9 and 3 both scratch, you have 4-1-5...etc...

IMHO, it is a mess to follow and score this year. A simple 3 horse box exacta with the top horse having a win ticket is all we need. You might want to make it a $2.00 exacta box for $12 and a $12 win bet to even it out for those who don't play gimmicks. This way you have a simple score and a level field between the gimmick and straight players.

Well, I will have to respectfully disagree!

I took the basic concept from last year, received feedback that it didn't accurately reflect "real life" wagering values. I then saught input as to how to weight the selections better which led to changing the straight $2.00 WPS to the weighted system of $6.00 (1st selection); $4.00 (2nd selection); and $2.00 (3rd selection). We then adjusted the $2.00 Exacta Box to a $3.00 Exacta Box to keep it proportional.

The 1-2-3 vs 1-1-2 Exacta Box is a "strategic" tool that lends itself to Teams with a strong opinion on certain races.

iCoder has developed a Scoring Calculator to assist people with self-scoring to double check. Other than the exhibition glitch, there has been no scoring issues other than human input error which is corrected a.s.a.p.

If the scorer is able to input, calculate and posts scores for 43 teams I don't see how it can be so difficult for a player to track their own score. When someone runs the old standby $2.00 Win/Place contests people complain; when we try to "juice" it up to make things fun and interesting, well, I've learned you just can't please everyone.

I don't pretend to be as competent as the "E-Ponies Commissioner" so again, I invite you to join the Scoring Team and come up with a format for one of the contests. We still have to finalize the concepts for Contest 6, 7 and 8!

IMO...this current format is a vast improvement over that of last year's contest. Jay should be congratulated for his efforts, and does not deserve to have his decisions criticized in this manner. Let's not forget...this is a FREE handicapping contest, with some great prizes; what more can a horseplayer ask for?

Do we remember the complaints of last year?

People criticized the divisional aspect of the contest, because it favored some teams while hurting others...so Jay did away with the divisions this year.

Others said that last year's contest included only stakes races, and didn't offer the varied menu that we normally find at the track. Jay solved that problem too...by introducing a great variety of races this year.

The top-performing regular season teams thought that their great regular season performance went unnoticed during the playoff stage...so Jay addressed that to.

And finally, many -- myself included -- pointed out that people normally don't make WPS wagers on three horses in the same race.

This was a tricky one to correct...because a straight "win" wager on ONE horse would not reward the horseplayer for any additional "insights" he might have in a race. What happens when a player's longshot gets nosed-out at the wire...and he loses the exacta. Does he deserve NOTHING AT ALL for his effort?

So Jay implemented an unequally proportioned WPS wager...which emphasized the top choice, while still taking notice of the other two picks in the race -- to a lesser extent.

All in all, it was a work of brilliance, in my opinion...and if I were to ever consider staging a handicapping contest, Jay would be my man without any hesitation at all.

I always knew that horseplayers were tough to please...but c'mon...

Team TVG plays em as the cards are dealt. if we have mostly big field, turf routes. so be it. its a handicapping challenge not a handicapping easy. Its supposed to be difficult. The best handicapping teams go to the front under this format. weighted WPS is an excellent idea. who in their right mind would wager equal amounts on three horses wps. it was a bit confusing at the beginning but it has settled down and now completely understand what it is we need to do every week.

Does it matter what order we post them??

Last year, no.

This year with the new scoring structure, ABSOLUTELY!

Go look at the rules section.

Your 1st choice gets the sum of their WPS payouts multiplied by 3.
Your 2nd choice gets the sum of their WPS payouts multiplied by 2
Your 3rd choice gets the sum of their WPS payouts.

I'm not singling Tom out when I say this.......I'm really surprised at all those who play various contests and DO NOT even take time to read (and re-read) the rules. One should not assume they will be the same as in prior years.

I like the new rules, especially with the weighting of the various selections. It does take a great deal more of skill and decision making as to how to order your top three picks, and even the first alternate choice.

I have to throw my 2 cents in seeing how I am as close to a third party as you can get. I'm a novice handicapper.

From the outside looking in I would say that the fact that teams (I saw at least 2) are using a shotgun approach with the weighted exactas for their picks indicates a move toward playing the contest and not the ponies. You probably can't win the contest that way but all you need is a little luck with a decent price and you can win for the day. Other strategies are being used as pointed out by Track Collector such as ordering your picks based on price on top. I know it would be difficult to do but I would think accuracy in the picks would be how it should be measured and money should mean nothing. Assuming you want a contest to measure a handicappers ability to predict the finish order and not how to best manipulate the contest. Of course everyone wants to pick the winner with a price but everyone here knows that will not happen 8 events in a row.

You could conclude that since most handicappers are looking for a price on top, then the way things are set up is conducive to that style but I would still think you would want to limit the possibilities of manipulating the contest with non-handicapping strategies. How many people here would go to the track and take a shotgun approach to the day. I'm guessing, not many. With that in mind I feel it diminishes the credibility of the contest when it is part of a series to determine the best handicapper of the year. The potential is there for the best contest strategist to win. Especially if they're lucky. And, in my opinion, luck should have no place in a handicapping contest.

Just an opinion and as everyone else has said, I appreciate the hard work that's gone into these contests and hope there will be many more. We will try to participate in as many as we have time for regardless of how the rules are.

I just can't see how a team can "manipulate the contest using non-handicapping strategies". A team can win for one week by getting lucky and cashing on a huge exacta or two...but how is that going to help them in the long run? The way the contest is scored, teams are rated according to POINTS...not money won. Even if a team blows the field away in one week, they are not given any more credit than if they would have won by a very small margin.

You say accuracy of picks should be of paramount importance, and money should mean nothing. That's a curious statement to make about a game where money means EVERYTHING. Successful handicapping is measured by the money won...not by the winning percentage of the picks. Otherwise...the player would back the probable favorite every time...and expect to win every single handicapping contest in existence...because no horse wins more races, in the long run, than the favorite.

You also say that "luck should have no place in a handicapping contest". That's good in theory...but impossible to put into practice. Are we ready to have a contest with 500-1000 races...where we can totally eliminate luck from the contest's outcome? it would either have to be a daily affair...or it would have to go on all year. How many people would be willing to commit to something like that?

It is IMPOSSIBLE to put together the "perfect" handicapping contest...so it is also impossible to please all the participants involved. But, IMO, pleasing the participants should not be the contest's intention.

As long as the rules do not conspire against, or favor, particular teams...then the contest is FAIR...and that's all a contest should strive to be.

I disagree. If I'm in a shooting contest and I get one bullet per round to hit the target and I hit the bullseye with that shot every time, then that proves that I have skill as a marksmen. If on the other hand there are contestants that choose to use a machine-gun, because it's allowed, then they would have an unfair advantage hitting the same target. To say that you can't manipulate the contest is certainly not the case. It's been proven already in this contest and suggested as a way to play by some. Any average handicapping team can be seen as the best for the day if they fill their picks with weighted exactas. To me that is not in the spirit of the contest and with a little luck the team could be ranked at a higher level overall than they deserve. The contestants are ranked by money won on a daily set of events. The number of points is simply the inverse sorted rank by dollars won. Up until now most teams have used the weighted exacta as a spot play. Which is what I believe was the original intention.

Your statement about handicappers being judged on money is true. In the real world. This is a contest based on wagers that are not from your pocket therefore placing it in the realm of fantasy play. As I stated before most participants as handicappers at the track would choose to play differently. Shouldn't a contest strive to emulate the real world and not a contrived one?

To think that you can eliminate luck from the contest would be naive and I wasn't suggesting that. No matter how huge the sample of races/events you still would not eliminate luck from the contest that is gained by normal means. I am of the opinion that having weighted bets is a vehicle for using luck as a non-handicapping strategy. I must admit when I saw the contest rules it immediately came to mind to post a card of weighted exactas each Saturday because of the huge advantage you can get from hitting them. I was just trying to point out that luck can be used as a non-handicapping strategy which in my opinion is not part of a good handicappers plan. Keeping in mind that I am not a good handicapper and am just going by the years I've been around them and I know they would like to have a little luck come their way but they don't count on it. Shotgunning 8 events with weighted exactas is saying that you are counting on some luck and are leveraging a perceived loophole (non-handicapping strategy) in the contest. Hitting one a day can be enough to rank you higher and therein lies the motivation. Having a team place high based on one good pick a day proves nothing. And skews(manipulates) the final results. It could mean the difference between getting into the playoffs or not if the decision comes down to a point or two. That is why I chose to suggest accuracy is a better measure of skill and stick to my guns when I say that there is non-handicapping strategies in the contest.

And in case you're wondering, my team is not last. We're mid field most times and 4th once. We have yet to play a weighted exacta. And I am not upset about the rules or how things are handled. My post began with getting my 2 cents worth in. While the iron was hot. I'm not looking for a fight or trying to belittle anyones efforts or feel slighted in any way or feel un-happy about the way things are going.

With all due respect icoder, a team using the weighted exacta isn't trying to manipulate anything. We're all different kind of horseplayers. Some prefer to grind and some want to make the very most of their hits when they have them because they employ a more contrarian approach to handicapping.

Regardless of what way you decide to play in this contest, you need to be consistent in order to succeed. It's not a non handicapping strategy to use the weighted exacta strategy and am kind of confused why you chose that terminology to describe it.

This game is ALL about making money...however you can do it. Any contest I have ever been in focuses on the amount of money you make. Not number of bets won.

For example, say you and I go to the track. We each bet 5 races, each $2 to win a race. You bet the even money favorite every race and hit 4 of your 5 bets. I play a 20-1 horse every race and only hit one race. Didn't I have a much better day, even though I only hit one race compared to your 4?

Our strategy this year is to play as many weighted exacta possibilities as our handicapping shows may, might, with a little luck come in. The handicapping that I have done over the many years has shown me that my top picks lose by a nose, a whisker or a hair in the majority of races that I handicap. Why to my disbelief and disappointment time and time again, they lose. So for my sanity and they way I've began to play this contest, my strategy is to discount my top picks. If I weight them by playing exacta's and they come in to my pleasant surprise, I and my team are pleased. If we can consistently maintain this strategy I would hope to get in the the Playoffs (yes Playoffs). Will we beat the other great handicappers in this game? Yes.

I would have to agree with Dahoss and respectfully disagree with iCoder on the Exacta strategy.

Having the option of a two-horse vs three-horse exacta box is not a manipulation, it is a "strategy" tool. Sure, if you hit the two-horse Exacta Box you score big but your also cutting down your chance of hitting significantly. Like Tom mentioned, if you truly come up with two horses that figure why would you want to waste your dollars on the third horse?

The weighting and the Exacta options are simply weapons in the arsenal. No two people are going to put together the exact same system, so we're obviously never going to have 129 players agree on the best format, but if I do say so myself (and I do), I put a lot of thought into this and I think overall the format lends itself to a unique competition with the opportunity for "big scores" and wild finishes. Good fun!

Our focus right now is to do a better job with getting the schedule up correctly; balancing the need for handicapping time; and trying to incorporate as many of the Free PPs as possible.

On a side note, I personally was very satisfied with the overall race selection and mix.

Thanks for listening to me and please bare with me once more.

First of all I'm not saying I want things to be changed. Once again I'll say that I was trying to have my input heard. My 2 cents. I certainly respect all of the participants opinions because they belong here more than I do being a novice. But I hear in the responses to my remarks a theme of measuring a contest by how you can predict the finish is somehow tainted by favorites. I don't believe I said once that you wouldn't try to predict a finish order that contained horses with a price or that you should make your picks based on the general publics selections. I was only trying to get a point across that accuracy is the measuring stick that I feel is most appropriate when you are gauging wether a handicapper is better than another. This is a handicapping contest right? Then why does that seem like such a foreign concept? I know everyone wants to pick a 20/1 over a 1/9 but if you were, somehow, a miraculous handicapper and could predict the finish of every race you would get all of those prices. Likewise you should have done better than the guy fishing for the 20/1. Theoretically speaking.

Jay you mention, why waste the money if you don't feel you need a third horse. I agree whole heartedly. But what I can't believe is that posting a race card of weighted exactas was because a third choice couldn't be found to add to the mix in every event. Sure, that can be a strategy for contest play but again I don't believe that is standard handicapper behavior. It's a way to increase your payout by chance. More like gambling than handicapping. Which I know my handicapping friends kick themselves in the rear when they end up gambling instead of handicapping. That is why I use the "non-handicapping" terminology (Dahoss9698). In my opinion it's not handicapping it is contest strategy. Manipulation may have been an inappropriate/strong choice of words but skewing the results is not. Assuming you are measuring accuracy of prediction. Handicapping as defined at thefreedictionary.com (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/handicapping) gives this definition as it applies to handicappers of horse racing:

4. (Individual Sports & Recreations / Horse Racing) US and Canadian
a. to attempt to forecast the winner of (a contest, esp a horse race)

No consideration given to price paid for the winning horse.

It's obvious I am in the minority with my opinion but that doesn't make it wrong. It just makes it different. And I would expect and welcome a differing opinion. Diversity of thought is the catalyst for all innovation. If the contest is a mix of handicapping and contest strategy then so be it. Conversely I don't get why accuracy doesn't work for the handicappers that want to pick a price. They are one in the same. Weighted exactas are for exciting finishes and big payouts. Which again, in my opinion, is not relevant to handicapping but is a feature added to the contest for entertainment purposes. That's cool. Everyone needs some fun once in a while.

I guess I have a lot to learn and I may be a little hard headed because I'm still stuck on the same opinion. :bang: After all I've spent my entire adult career measuring phenomenon accurately. It's hard to break from old habits.

Jeff, I think you are arguing with yourself....

Once again I'll say that I was trying to have my input heard. My 2 cents.

I was only trying to get a point across that accuracy is the measuring stick that I feel is most appropriate when you are gauging wether a handicapper is better than another. This is a handicapping contest right? Then why does that seem like such a foreign concept?

You're mistaking my response for as a dismissal of your opinion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Accuracy is certainly a significant factor in handicapping but truth be told R.O.I. is the universal measuring stick. Haviing a contest that focuses on "accuracy" (selecting winners) is certainly an option for one of our other contests.

But what I can't believe is that posting a race card of weighted exactas was because a third choice couldn't be found to add to the mix in every event. Sure, that can be a strategy for contest play but again I don't believe that is standard handicapper behavior.

I would equate posting weighted exactas for every race is no different than only playing selections at 10/1 or higher. If it is your strategy to play the higher odds selections you don't hop around playing low odds horses or you're playing a game of "market timing" and that never works well. You stick to your strategy looking for the one big hit.

Using a Canadian reference -- that's just wrong -- they're crazy!!!

It's obvious I am in the minority with my opinion but that doesn't make it wrong. It just makes it different. And I would expect and welcome a differing opinion.

Exactly, you're not wrong, you just have a different opinion and I go back to the fact that your arguing with yourself because I don't see anyone beating up on you for that opinion.

It's all good!

Thanks for listening to me and please bare with me once more.

First of all I'm not saying I want things to be changed. Once again I'll say that I was trying to have my input heard. My 2 cents. I certainly respect all of the participants opinions because they belong here more than I do being a novice. You belong in this contest just as much as anybody else...ragardless of how experienced a player you are. There is no "caste" system in handicapping contests. It's "democracy" all the way. But I hear in the responses to my remarks a theme of measuring a contest by how you can predict the finish is somehow tainted by favorites. I don't believe I said once that you wouldn't try to predict a finish order that contained horses with a price or that you should make your picks based on the general publics selections. Sure, that can be a strategy for contest play but again I don't believe that is standard handicapper behavior. What makes you say this? Why isn't this "standard handicapping behavior"? Some bettors bet three-horse exacta boxes, and some don't. Some players weigh all their horses the same...and others structure their exactas by giving added emphasis to one of the runners. It's ALL standard handicapping behavior, IMO. The truth is, if you are not a very good handicapper, this "strategy" will blow up in your face. Ever wonder why more teams are not using it? Manipulation may have been an inappropriate/strong choice of words but skewing the results is not. Assuming you are measuring accuracy of prediction. icoder...

Would you mind explaining to me how you have determined that weighted exactas are such a "lucky" venture...and that they have little to do with "handicapping"?

You do realize that you can't win this contest without picking your share of winning exactas...right?

And if you are not a great handicapper...how do you intend on picking these exactas, when you are only using two horses in a race.

Do you think DaHoss would be using this strategy, if he wasn't a great handicapper?

I wouldn't mind at all but I think you are putting words in my mouth. I never said anything of the sort.

What I did say is that playing a full card of weighted exactas is, in my opinion, an attempt to hit a big payout by lucking into it. I don't know why this is so hard to see. It doesn't take much checking to know that the weighted exactas when hit have a huge payout potential. We've seen it every Saturday. If a team is playing one or two a card that looks normal and doesn't raise any red flags. That would be what you would expect. A full series of events played as weighted exactas does. Bottom line I just don't buy that a great handicapper has such confidence in his picks that he/she feels that they only need 2 horses per race 8 events in a row. How is that not seen as playing a feature of the contest and instead seen as proper/great handicapping? I'm beginning to feel like I'm in the "Twilight Zone". Hopefully I'll wake up soon.

I have admitted I am a novice handicapper but I am not naive. If you can narrow it down to 2 horses per event and you have that much confidence in your picks then why wouldn't you be hitting the majority of them? Or half? 2 or more? It's making sure you have every race covered so you are in on the off chance that one comes in. It's chance. Not skill. Yes you do have to pick the horses to put into the exacta bet but that's not the point. Using a contest feature/rule to get a high score in the contest is. In my opinion the handicapping challenge has two elements to winning it. Contest strategy and handicapping. It is billed as a handicapping contest not a handicapping and contest strategy competition. And that is what I've been saying all along. I'm not saying that DaHoss is not a great handicapper. He is simply playing the game to a perceived advantage. And it worked. I have posted before that I toyed with the idea myself and thought better of it. No need for explanation there. I'm saying that the contest is not pure handicapping in my opinion. But that's ok with me. I was just expressing my opinion which appears to be quite controversial.

I will contend that having an unbalanced approach to ROI hurts the best handicappers more than any others. If I can sit back with mediocre handicapping and hit a weighted exacta or two I can possibly out rank a handicapper better than me. Again, I am not saying anyone here is mediocre except maybe myself. Just illustrating my point.

I do realize that you have to hit an exacta or two. I'm not alone. These are 3 member teams. We in fact have hit an exacta or 2 or 3... The traditional way. I'm not that confused. :)

I'm going to close this thread as it is an actual Game thread. All opinions are valued and seen in good spirit -- this is a handicapping discussion board after all.

Discussion may be continued in the IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT (http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91182) thread.
