View Full Version : Summer Outing to Arlington?

Yes, it is a ways off, but I was wondering if there is interest in a PA gathering some Sat or Sun this summer at Arlington? I was at the Spa last year for a few days and it was fun to hang around with others who are on PA. I am only envisioning a single day (versus the Spa week-plus). Not a particlarly formal event per se - we can look to snag a table or two just outside the grandstand.

It looks to me that there are a number of folks who are in the area (and anyone from outside would be welcome of course - Arlington is a very nice facility).

If you are interested, just reply here. We can organize, etc in April/May

CapperAl suggested this to me a few days ago...and I think it's a great idea.

Arlington is my home turf...and I would be more than happy to handle all the needed accommodations.

Meeting all you guys in person would be such a thrill to me, that I would beg you to allow me to treat you to dinner at the finest Greek restaurant in town.

Would love to join you guys if I happened to be in my old home town at the time. Chances are very slim, though........

I did, however, just receive this tweet of the graded stakes schedule for Arlington Park this coming season. Thought it might be of use.......

You are 100% correct. I am originally from NY.....the Greek restaurants here are nothing like NY diners!!!

Very generous of you (though I'm happy to chip in for my portion). Is there a place near the track? Greektown would be a trek for folks I think.

I can't make Chicago, but if I gave you a Fex Ex account number, perhaps a "to go" order? :D

One of my favorite stops when I was in Detroit was always Monroe Avenue and the Greektown food. there was this one little place, family run, all the owner's daughters worked there, and it was l like the place in Seinfeld....you know! :p

As it is likely this thread is dormant for a bit, just wanted to summarize where we are at.

We will DEFINITELY have an outing this summer at Arlington. Probably in the early April time frame we will start to narrow down to a specific date. My guess is we will look at a date in June (this way, if there is interest, we could have a 2d outing in Aug/Sept). Several folks here on PA have connections at Arlington and have graciously offered to help me organize it etc.

Similar to the SAR 'party' we will keep it relatively informal (also know and very inexpensive) as the focus will be on getting to know each other etc.

More details to follow in ~April.

we will start a list and we could do this in the mode of HANNA members...
we did this a couple of years ago at Keeneland and were treated very well
by Keeneland...maybe we could approach Arlington with this in mind...
HANNA membership costs nothing unless someone has problems with that..
although I don't know why anyone would. we had productive meetings with management and many extras..just a thought chime in with some feedback..

After this springs trip to Aqueduct (hopefully) for the Wood, I will have two more tracks to do to complete my list of the (what I think are) majors, AP and Del Mar.

So, if you all decide to do this, the sooner you can decide on a date the easier to arrange with air fare, lodging, etc...

This is an excellent idea and I would like to join in. As with everyone, it would depend on the dates. As of now I have no summer plans, but things do change.

I would hope that everyone, in town and out of town, who has indicated interest would be able to come.

You suggest we could "look to snag a table or two just outside the grandstand." I assume you are referring to the white tables set up under the overhang. That is where my friends and I sit when we go to Arlington. The only difficulty with that is someone would have to get their early (11am) in order to "snag" the tables. They go pretty fast.

An alternative to consider is the Terrace Cafe. Information here.
http://www.arlingtonpark.com/visit/dining-options

tbwinner has offered the use of his box and other boxes if necessary. Maybe that is the option decide to go with, but I am thinking some people may want a table for laptops and other handicapping paraphernalia. (I can't believe I spelt that right on the first try. )

I am only envisioning a single day (versus the Spa week-plus).

Expand your vision. :jump: Lions, tigers, bare girls riding horses....I mean girls riding horses bareback. :jump:
Maybe that's a little over the top, but instead of a single day perhaps a weekend.

Friday evening Maywood Park for harness racing. They have a very good buffet on friday evenings for around $22-$23. In the summer my friends and I like to sit outside at tables on the apron and get food from the grill inside; Hot dogs, burgers, Polish, Italian and a lot of other stuff. That would be another option.
Info here:
http://www.maywoodpark.com/Promotions/2012/January/MP-Groups-2012.pdf

The $19.95 price shown on the link is for groups of 15 or more and includes admission, parking, and program.
I considered Balmoral briefly, but as you know, Balmoral is more than sixty miles from Arlington.

Saturday afternoon: Arlington Park for thoroughbred racing.
Saturday early evening: find ATM to deposit excess cash from winnings.
Saturday evening: Dinner at Greek Restaurant or other.

Sunday afternoon: return to Arlington Park. or Cubs game as suggested by someone.
FYI: June 15, 16, 17 Cubs are playing the Red Sox. Would a great game to see but I doubt if tickets are available for a group.
June 29, 30 and July 1 Astros.
July 13, 14, 15 D-backs
July 27, 28 and 29 Cardinals. Again tickets at a premium.
or you can pick a weekend when the White Sox are in town.

Of course no one has to attend all the events, I just thought that having things planned for three days rather than one would give the out of town folks an incentive to attend.

But, this is your shindig so whatever you decide.

I like all the discussion!

Just FYI my box and the other ones I have access to have tables in them. They fit 7 people, 4-5 people comfortably with laptops, room for forms, etc...

Any Saturday would probably work, aside from the "big" days like KY Derby, Preakness, Belmont. The week after the Belmont might work best?

I love the interest here!!!! This will be fun.

I'd be OK with a weekend of events though we would need to get a better sense of who would be up for the add'l events. People from out-of-town would likely be up for all of them. Some of us 'locals' might need to balance family stuff. But we'll see.

Since Tbwinnner has the 'keys to the box", what do others think about the weekend after the Belmont Stakes - June 15/16/17 (Cubs-Red Sox tix would be tough but those who want to go can find them I suspect. It will be very difficult to get a group of tix - maybe not as much for the Astros but that is close to 4th of July).

Let us know if that June weekend could work for you.

We can figure out food when we get closer. Transportation to something like Greektown could be an issue for a lot of guys and traffic into the city ona Sat night isn't usually a pretty picture. We may be better served having dinner Sat night near the track. I am guessing that some folks will stay near the track (we can look into group hotel rates if there are enough people interested).

June 17th is Fathers Day in my opinion this makes it even better..Father
should get to do a fun thing on his day....interest seems to be very high
we will need to get some numbers ahead of time....might even get a
winners circle appearance for the group and some freebies from AP...
we did get a lot from Keeneland when we went there 2 years ago..
I was also thinking of a informal meeting with maybe a trainer and
a short Q & A maybe like 15 min --also a meet with say track super
to inform us on Poly maintainance, tendencies...if there is any interest
please give your feedback...the sooner we get started on setting this up
the better the chance of making it happen...if no interest in this voice your
opinion...
