A massive explosion on the sun's surface has triggered the largest solar radiation storm since 2005 and has unleashed a torrent of charged plasma particles toward Earth, though the threat to satellites, power grids and other high-tech hardware is believed to be manageable, scientists said.

I hope this does not effect i-pads, i-phones, texting, or the like. The 20-30 somethings will need psychiatric counseling if unable to tweet, twitter, facebook, text, etc.... for any longer than 3 minutes.

There have been guests on the radio show Coast-to-Coast who for sometime have been predicting these large solar flares and the bad consequences they could have upon our planet.

P.S. Hey, Hcap, dig out one of your fancy AGW charts and tie it into these solar flares. We have to be causing the sun to behave like a bimbo eruption. :D

It's takes about 8 minutes for the light the Sun emits to hit the earth. Wouldn't we have already suffered the effects?

Edit: Nevermind... Just read the whole thing. Must be a different model they use for that radiation.

No. 8 minutes is how long it take electromagnetic radiation. The solar flare emitted particles. And, while they are going very fast, it is something far less than "c".

Yeah got that.

Lets play who gets a power outage!

I read somewhere that "c"... might not be.

This would change most everything.

Really? C can vary because of external conditions like gravity but I thought for most computations is was still an assumed constant.

Guess what amount of effect what just happened has on our climate compared with homosapien-made carbon dioxide?

Let's just say, the sun, clouds, the oceans and atmospheric elements makeup 99.9999999% of the weather we experience, and homosapien CO2 has a .00000000001% effect.

Won't you stop man from ruining Mama Nature? Every little bit helps.
