So... the theory is that congress will be upset that they can't access Wikipedia for a whole 24 hrs and will vote to kill the bills?

You know, "going dark" would also be a great way of saying, "Contribute to save us or else this will be the world without Wikipedia."

Not a bad idea.

I think its brilliant.

The millions of people who use the site daily will be made more aware of the legislation.

Censorship of the internet is wrong. The bill is the start of a slippery slope.

However, only 535 vote.

And I haven't seen any evidence lately that congress pays any attention to what its constituents want.

Good that the blackout is scheduled for a dark day at Gulfstream.

This is very important that government not interfere with the freedom that we have come to know and enjoy on the internet. Call your representative and Senators and say, NO!

If this is so, a blackout of porn sites would be much more effective.

Exactly. Now if two or three other other big boys had pulled the switch on their sites for the day, that would have sent a loud and clear message.

Careful, Chris Dodd (now of Motion Picture Ass. America) says that these blackouts are "dangerous"!!!!!!!!!!!

In a statement issued today (PDF), MPAA chairman and CEO--and former U.S. Senator--Chris Dodd railed against the blackouts, calling them "an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on [the sites] for information and [who] use their services."

Dodd also said that the blackouts are "an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests."

As if government never abuses its power! What a hypocrite! Not only that, but it goes to show the kind of fascist mentality Dodd has. Is Dodd saying that if a business (publicly or privately owned) wants to shut its doors, it can't or shouldn't in order to protest against government's abuse of power!? :bang: :bang: Doesn't Dodd know that we have that right in this country!? "Dangerous and troubling", indeed.

But yet we have those such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and other leftists that wish to reimpose the misnamed Fairness Doctrine, the main purpose of which is to silence conservative talk radio and Fox news, and any other dissent in the media from the political Right.

Shouldn't we say.."it's a dangerous and troubling development when the politicians that serve as gateways to representation intentionally skewer the facts to incite their voters in order to further their political and financial interests."

No Chris is right -- corporations are supposed to give Congress bribes in order to further their corporate interests. The corps behind SOPA+PIPA paid Congress around $94 million to get the bill written. The corps against it are supposed to pay more than the guys for it, that's how it works!

Just pissing off the "constituents" is like playing dirty:

A.) What, no money!?
and
B.) Now all these people are pissed at us!

Damn. I thought I was maybe being too cynical when I started a thread on this very same topic of corporate interests (lobbyists) about a half an hour ago.

want to bypass the wiki blackout?

I used google translate. just translate it into another language and just select view original and there you go wiki pages come up perfect. you can click links and works fine, but going to a page via the wiki serch box will result in it going back to the blackout page.

works for me should work for anyone else too, pretty simple.

just goes to show you that even when you try to prevent someone from doing something, where there is a will there is a way.

just my 2 cents for the day

I have made this a little bolder & bigger, just in case some haven't seen it or just glossed over this.....

It is about control.....All

At "First Crisis", whether self induced, imagined, or even real, these laws will finally tell the tale that has been unfolding for some time now....

I would like to see a chart or a graph that explain's, to me at least, why "all of this" is so good for us....

"We can't let the terrorists win", sure, right, of course, that is what it is........I don't buy it one bit, not one..

best,

Doesn't this make them win?
And aren't we just substituting one terrorist group for another one?
Here's my prediction for 2012 - the dark side of the world (governments) now see the giant threat the internet can be, re the Arab Spring.

Watch out......the ability of people to communicate freely is the biggest threat to all governments.

That's perfectly it Tom.....Now, with these bills in place, "One Major Crisis" is all it will take to declare "martial-law", suspend elections, and shut down the internet and cell service, and then, we will all be clueless and in the dark...For a good long while, if not forever...

God Bless America, Please !.....And curse all the cowards, the moneygrubbers, and the gangsters in DC who have gone along with all of this...To fight terrorism, bull.....The terrorists are in power now....And, sadly most Amerikans are clueless, or they just don't want to believe that the worst of man could possibly happen here...

If and when this happens there will be armed insurrections or even perhaps all out civil war. All of the far right, and also I presume, the far left ones as well, militia groups, have long trained and prepared for such an event. Bullets will fly and explosions will go off and citizens will die.

I asked how much in bribes he received to write the bill, and was told that office cannot discuss campaign contributions.

So much of our inter/intra state commerce is now so totally dependent on the Internet....If they pulled the plug on "it", how long before the food in the stores will be depleted, which will and should be our first priority, and now with no way to re-order anything, what should happen next ?... "Then the Chaos will begin", and we will be left helpless not knowing WTF is going on with each other, anywhere, about anything....Then, we will be left to solely relying on what the TV & radio stations, that have already become lackeys of BigBro, will tell us...So, what they tell us will be the only thing that we will know, which imo won't amount to anything approaching the real "TRUTH ....Then what ?....

Oh No !....that couldn't happen here, could it ?
