Excerpt:

That brings us back to a so far dry winter in Southern California, where the takeout on bets are still too high (22.68 to 23.68 percent on two- and three-horse or more wager) despite complaints from many a bettor.

That's why Oaklawn's opening will be watched very closely by the financial guys at Santa Anita. Will bettors — particularly big ones— look for a bargain or will they continue to pony up the extra coin to wager on Southern California racing?

The racing product this winter at Santa Anita has been first-rate, but which track is going to have the guts to bring down takeout on some bets within reasonable numbers?

Del Mar CEO Joe Harper was willing to last summer, particularly on the antiquated rolling daily doubles, but he was rebuffed by the Thoroughbred Owners of California.

Santa Anita and Hollywood Park also suggested similar trials last fall, but were shot down by the same TOC.

It's time for some race track to take the bull by the horns, and like Larry the Cable Guy says, "Git-R-Done."
