Haven't seen a story on any of the wires about Coach Jimi Lee and the 1:07.27 that was run on Friday at Hawthorne. I don't know if it was a track record or not. I don't think there has been a faster 6f in the last couple of years at any track.

I saw that race...it was indeed a track record....

ABOUT COACH JIMI LEE ----- I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE FASTEST 6 FURLONG RACE EVER IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS

In the 5th, an $8K claimer ran 1:08.21, and how about those $4K & $5K claimers almost running 1:09 on the same card.

Nevertheless, Coach Jimi Lee was one FFV on that day!

FFV is a trivia teaser for the oldest members on the board (i.e., an old racing term from before WW-II that originated in the railroad industry). :)

Hawthorne was a total paved highway this past weekend. That raw time really meant nothing. I'm only projecting around a 95 on the Beyer scale for him.

I had a variant of "1" on that day. That's the fastest i've ever seen that track. He got a 99 beyer. I gave him a 102 Final Figure.

I gave it a 91.

how did the variant compare to the Illinois Derby day? consistent with them suping it up on purpose? for a big day? just wonder......

if you guys have the data, how about going back two years to Illinois Derby day with War Emblem.....how did it compare?

I know the Illinois Derby that War Emblem won was run in a slow time, but I think that was at Sportsman's Park. Quite a bit of debate about the figures that day on this board. I kept insisting not only was the race fast, but the pace was quick too. For once at least, I was right!

OK, I had time to look it up.

This year, the Derby was run at Haw, and the track variant was 18 Beyer points slow. In 2002, the race was run at Spt, and the variant was 9 Beyer points slow.

I have a route variant of "3". The sprint variant was "1". I feel the War Emblem race was far better than Ten Most Wanted's race.

Pace Call Final Time Last Fraction
War Emblem 113.0 149.9 36.9
Race Pace 113.0

Ten Most Wanted 112.4 151.5 39.1
Race Pace 111.7

CJ,

Why do you feel that the track was 18 beyer points slow? I had the variant as AVG for that day not slow.

I don't think that War Emblem's pace was fast but, when you go 1:13 and come home in under 1:50 that's a fast final time.

Daily track variants:

Haw 12/12/03 -47.4
Haw 4/5/03 +16.6
Spt 4/6/02 +10.6

Looking at the War Emblem race I see that my current variant for Spt 4/6/02 is 8 points faster than it was immediately after the race (I think I had a 131 for War Emblem; I know it was over 130; now I have 123).

I update all of my variants weekly. While I get no practical benefit from changing variants from 10 years ago (they probably only change due to floating point error anyway), I think there is considerable benefit from getting a more accurate take on variants for the last few months.

I might find it interesting to look at the Coach Jimmi Lee race in a month or two to see if I view it any differently.

Big difference between Spt and Haw. For one thing, War Emblem was lone speed in his race. I thought his Beyer his correct but I couldn't bet him in Kentucky because I knew he was a lone speed at Spt and I (mistakenly) thought he'd get more pace pressure at CD. Of course, I was expecting him to be 8-1 or 10-1 and was surprised to see him at 20-1.

I think Ten Most Wanted's number was legit. Great gaps in that race; if I remember correctly it was a speed favoring track. Both horses helped put that race on the map as a legit Ky Derby prep.

We are obviously basing our variants on different pars, which is pretty irrelevant as long as it is consistent. I am using the time which equates to a raw Beyer speed figure of 80 as my base.

SPT never carded many races at 1-1/8 or longer, but the reconfigured 7/8ths oval was the longest stretch run in North America. Because tiring 1-1/8th routers change leads at the head of this exceedingly long stretch drive, I was impressed with War Emblem's BRIS pace/speed figs, which rated his Illinois Derby as the best PP prior to the KY Derby. The big question was the bone chip issue which was no secret among Midwest backsiders... but the odds finally demanded a play against a bounce or infirmity.
