Surprised no one commented on Sunday's $414,167 takedown:

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/thoroughbred-racing/gulfstream-s-10-cent-rainbow-6-wager-hit-for-414-166/

It might be just a dime bet, but it's still a big-boy game.

Question: What sort of crowd hangs at Northfield Downs? And I wonder if Sunday's winner was the same party that was alive to five horses for the whole enchilada on Thursday?

I was wondering the same thing. This was BIG news for Horseplayers, yet no one on here makes a comment? I'm hearing crickets. This kind of score is what keeps me going. Its the Holy Grail to grab a big jackpot. IMO, you need big scores to beat this game and its high takeout rates. I tip my hat to this guy. HRTV was on the ball Sunday as Kurt Hoover and Scott Hazelton interviewed him. Nice job!

BTW, its Northville Downs where he plays not Northfield where I like to go sometimes. The cappers at Northfield are some of the best anywhere when it comes to Handicapping contests.

Great story,basically a 10cent pk5.

The winning ticket was a 10-Cent part/wheel that read:

1,2,5,6,7/9/1,5,6,7,9,11,12/1,2,5,6,8,9,10/3,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,16/2,3,4,6,8,10. The total cost of the ticket was $1,323.00

The payouts have been outstanding at Gulfstream lately.

Its puzzling to me that there are 36 posts on a thread about making money on show bets, but little or no interest about a life changing score with a well thought of plan to construct the winning ticket that made this happen. :bang:

Understandable when you think most people could not afford an over $1300 bet...I think it was a great story and I understand why they constructed the bet like they did but beyond that it doesn't help "most" people...

What about the guy that took down the Black Gold 5 on a $2.00 wager a few weeks ago?

These are the stories I want to read and discuss. One of my biggest thrills was hitting the old twin-tri at Penn National about 15 years ago with only one exchange ticket...meaning I had to pick the second tri in exact order. It was only about 3K, but its something I was always proud of doing. But I know I'm in the minority as the thread on making money on show bets grows as this one stagnates.

What would help most is explaining that this bet has a takeout rate of over 50% for all players except the lucky 1 that hit it. To praise this bet and the Black-Gold Pick 5 is to encourage tracks to offer more horrible betting propositions for the average fan.

Good response...that is why many bettors, myself included, don't jump in until the jackpot is worthwhile. I'll say about 150K for me. Look at the unbelievable payouts for ten cents the days preceding the 414K one winner payout. Quite a few were over 10K. This is equivalent to a 200K payout for the $2.00 pick 6 in California. Making a wager in the two to three hundred range is fine by me when the jackpot gets high enough. The 50% takeout is downsized naturally when people press the 'ALL" button in a few legs and logical horses win. You would never do it when its a $2.00 punch with 25% takeout.

IMHO, This past Sat (1/7/2012) at GPX, far more value existed in the normal serial race bet pools (DD, P3, P4, and P5) on the second half of the card than existed in the Rainbow P6 (despite the carryover.)

Excellent point.

Sort of surprising to see the guy who talks endlessly about takeout (Jelly) has sort of missed this point.

I think this is a good point as well.

Showing people that it is possible to win and actually showing (or profiling) people who do or have won large sums would help attract new bettors in my opinion.
