Churchill Downs’ longtime director of horsemen’s relations Julian Logan “Buck” Wheat — known by many as the unofficial “mayor of the backside” — died Wednesday at University Hospital.

One of the true titans in the long history of Churchill Downs, yet as humble and giving as any man I've ever met. If ever a man in racing deserved to have a book written about his life, it is Buck. I will miss him every day, and even more when I walk onto the grounds at Churchill.
