No standouts entered this year, at least at this point in their careers. if you stick with the horses winning at 1 1/16th at Hollywood you get:

Liaison

Sky Kingdom

Both trained by Baffert and working bullets

------------------------------------------------
Of the others at above 10-1 I like these two.

Cozzetti won at 1 1/16th in the slop against a weak field at CD and gets Leparoux who flies in from from Florida for the mount.

Empire Way goes long after his strange effort in the Prevue.

I haven't looked at the PPs yet, but I read that Garcia elected to stay on Drill with the provision that he gets to ride him 'his way'. For whatever that's worth.

Thanks for the link, here's some coffee addled thoughts.

I can make a case for Drill at the right price: Throw out the Delta Jackpot with him on a 22 second flat 1st qtr and he never was in the BC race for whatever reason. Prior to that he was second to Creative Cause who is probably better than anything in this race. Lastly, he just may prefer AW over dirt. At low odds none of the above applies. :D

I'd probably toss Roman's horse, he was odds on in a MSW race off a not too hot 2nd start, my guess is he probably wasn't facing much, then ran away in the slop. Plus if he wants the front he'll need to contend with Majestic City.

:3: .........what do you do with this one?

Rolling late ? If it falls apart.............

I haven't played SoCal in over 18 mths but might put a few bucks on this one just for fun............just because

I think he is just trying to get a piece.........

Two longshot possibilities:

Handsome Mike - Ran a winning race in the Generous, contested a killer pace and held on for 2nd behind a deep closer that took advantage of the shape. I look for Nakatani to rate him just off the lead.

Brother Francis - A maiden in a G1? Well, he would be 2 for 2 if he had broken cleanly. This is a high potential horse who will love the distance. Of course he needs a clean break this time.

I bet on a couple of horses that came out of his sprint race and they ran poorly. The reason I bet them is that they dueled with Handsome Mike and then quit. Normally the run up downhill is 131 ft but in that race the run up was at it's shortest distance of 84 ft. This horse went 21 and one and kept going to win. That's why I figured it was a really strong race. I don't know if the timer was wrong or the run up was wrong or it was just one of those races you can't explain.

Anyway you probably ought to double your bet on Handsome Mike. I probably just put him in the winners circle.

The :13: Desormais will be somewhere in my tickets.

Interesting that Dominguez went to CA for the race when he's winning everything in NY these days. It's a big purse, but he must like his chances - even from the outside.

Super tough race in my opinion - could go almost any direction and find an angle I like but for some reason I keep coming back to :8: Rousing Sermon as a steadily progressing type with seasoning, experience at the distance, a win over the track along with several solid breezes there leading into this. Just seems like he may get overlooked and really has done nothing wrong per se and gives the impression that connections are gearing to win this one rather than using this one as a "talent gauge" or a race to learn in and build off of.

Oops.

Meant :5: :6: :7:

Is Drill strictly a poly horse or is he just lousy?
Inquiring minds want to know.

After looking closer, I think the :6: needs a slow pace to be a factor - he won't see one like that here. His only good race was against turtles.
And the :7: looks terrible the more I look at him. So just the :5: and forget trying to get two of these slugs home.....terrible race. Give me a nickel claimer for nw2 any day.

All in all, pretty  bunch.
California racing is worse than I though it was!

So all this talk about Martin wanting to ride him the way he wanted to....looked that same as last time - go to the front and die like a pig.

IMHO blingo was just passing tired horses. he will run on but he won't ever beat a horse that wants to run long and likes dirt IMHO. He's just missing a few gears

pretty exciting race

Sorry part about it is, the earnings from this miserable race almost assure a genuine good horse will get blocked out of the derby.

2 yo earnings should not count at all toward the Derby.

He's just missing a few gears

Why is this a miserable race? Most of this field will go on to win some good races in their career.

The majority of the field kind of finished together in one big, amorphous mass. That suggests, at least on initial impression, that it wasn't a strong race.

For an instant, it looked like Liaison would spread-eagle the field past the 1/8th pole and separate himself from the other 2yos in CA. But he was life and death to the wire.

No surprises, the horses who were running well at distance performed nicely today with the exception of Brother Francis who placed third off two sprint races. Home field advantage ruled today.

Spalding. Sometimes horses that wait on rivals can look life and death when they are still really green. I'm convinced that's the case with Liaison. Go back and watch his last two closely and see if you might agree.

Aqueduct 6th yesterday...In a rematch with Malibu Holiday, I'd hope for Be With Me to draw into a potentially beneficial pace scenario, with Malibu Holiday drawing outside.
The apprentice strangled BWM on the first turn to avoid dueling, and re-challenged the odds-on Lisa T entering the stretch, hanging in well until midstretch. Malibu Holiday saved ground all the way, saved energy when forced to wait some strides, and didn't zoom thru the stretch once clear.
For me, trip handicapping is so much more subtle than apparent traffic problems.

With the heads up by posters here regarding Malibu Holiday, I'm instead putting Be With Me on my watch list.

Vic, I thoroughly enjoy your race calls and signature drama when the thrill of racing plays itself out in deep stretch.

Frankly, I was expecting Bob Baffert to get permission to remove the blinkers after the Real Quiet, as "waiting on horses" was a potential excuse there (it was a slow pace and he jumped back to his left lead down the lane). However, in the CashCall, Liaison was hard pressed to get the lead at the top of the stretch and was fully extended to the wire, all-out to hold off the Cal-bred.

His efforts are nothing like, say, Looking At Lucky's at 2, who would stalk, pounce and make the lead rather easily before throwing up his ears and shutting down towards the finish.
