Christopher Hitchens, noted humanist, atheist, and author (including No One Left to Lie To (about Bill Clinton); and God Is Not Great) has succumbed to cancer at age 62.

One of my favorite academic "thinkers." By his self-report in Hitch22 he was quite a lefty in his student years. Reading his later positions he moved considerably more right. I considered him to be an "independent" minded atheist who had good insights into most of the topics (including the Middle East) that he commented on.
