Strike the Gold, who was still the leading active stallion in Turkey, fractured his left front pastern while in his paddock Dec. 13, and after being examined by a team of veterinarians, was euthanized. He had battled laminitis recently, but was still in relatively good health until his injury.

Twenty years ago Strike The Gold won the Derby with Antley aboard. Nick Zito has said that this was the horse that " brouht him to the promised land ".
Although I wished he had remained in the states, I'm glad he very was well respected in Turkey. RIP!

Every time we lose one of the horses that brings back fond memories for me it hurts a little more than I would have guessed.

The two things I recall most about his Derby win:

(1) If I had 10 picks in the race, I doubt that I'd have had STG.

(2) He was the first of several KY Derby winners to buck the dosage theory.
Dr. Roman, et al, had to get back to the drawing board after that one.
Consequently, a few more chef-de-races were named pretty fast.

Nice horse, and it was nice to see Chris Antley have a big day.

This is sad news. I always loved Strike The Gold. His sire, Alydar, was one of
my childhood favorites. The day Alydar died I was shocked and depressed.
I sat down to watch racing from New York that day and still remember
Tom Durkin's call of one race: "On the day his daddy died, Strike The Gold
wins his first race!" I became an instant fan of "Gold".

I followed him thru Florida and cashed in the Blue Grass and the Derby.

Funny thing about the Derby and his "Dosage", I was glad he did not qualify
because it made his price better. Most people did not understand how the Dosage System worked. The numbers changed if a sire was a "Chef-de-Race"
stallion. Alydar was not but was going to become a "classic Chef" for sure.
He had already sired Alysheba & Easy Goer. When he did, Strike The Gold's
numbers fell well within line.

Goodbye old friend.....

Good Luck, Sea Hero-- now he has the job of "Oldest Living Derby Winner"
