Peter Ferriola, who topped The New York Racing Association trainer standings in 1987, 1991, and 1992, died Dec. 9 in Spring Hill, Fla. from complications of a stroke and chronic diabetes. He was 69.I remember the first couple of years I seriously started to get into racing (late 80s, early 90s), Ferriola was "the man." Was winning everything left and right and suspected of everything left and right.

I look fondly back on those days when I was getting my feet wet in the game here in NY, and he is a trainer I will always remember.

When I was a kid my dad use to point to him and say "that man has paid for alot of our vacations".

Remembering the days of Pistol Pete and the Gas Man (Gasper Moschera) brings back fond memories of when racing on the inner dirt track was its own league. These guys left Saratoga to the big boys. The inner dirt track was their Saratoga, their time to shine.

One of the best 'leg' men in the training profession.

Learned his trade under sharp claiming and (overall horsemen) trainers John Campo and Bobby Frankel.

One of the nicest and most respected guys in the very tough world of thoroughbred horse racing.

RIP Pete Ferriola
