I said 3 months ago Reyes and Pujols would sign with Marlins, though he hasnt signed yet, would you pay Pujols 200 million over 10 years?IMO it would be the worst contract in the history of baseball.Go ask former owner of Texas Hicks what happen when he signed Arod, 3 years later hes filing for bankruptcy..Let Pujols walk Cards, his age 32 is still in question.

Would never offer any more than 6 years. And that might be pushing it. A great player, no doubt. Ted Williams like numbers. But nobody knows what he'll be like in 5 years or 7 years.

If I was a GM I would go to the limit per year (whatever the budget says limit wise) but the number of years would be the key.

I would take my cue from the Mets (Reyes), and let him beat me in another uniform. Not gonna pay him until his mid-40's, that's for sure. Nobody knows his true age, anyway, which is another deal-breaker on anything more than a 5 or 6 year deal. Above posters have it right.

No way I would pay him. He isn't worth what he wants for 5 years, let alone 10. The money could be better spent elsewhere. Baseball is still a team game.

Tough to justify the contract he wants, given his age. If he goes to the Marlins look for Zambrano to be traded to the Marlins also as the Cubs will probably eat a lot of that contract, and get Gaby Sanchez in return from the Marlins.

As a player he is not worth the money, but that's not what it is about. It about the revenue he will generate for the team. Will the Marlins (or whoever) bring in $200 million more with him than they would without him? I don't have the answer to that question.

That is easy answer...no, they will not.

Hey cj and others who posted here, you think the Marlins were out of line? Stupid offer? Well now it's reported that the LA Angels are willing to go even higher. Ten years 210 million. It's a crazy world out there in the entertainment business. And make no mistake that is what pro sports are today--entertainment.
Plus it's also reported that there is still another "mystery" team out there with an offer. From a baseball only standpoint I agree with all the posters that this is crazy with the 10 year deal optionl. Thankfully we are not the ones paying it out. :)
I would disagree with cj on one point. If as a baseball guy I could get Pujols for 6 years at 25 mil per year I would jump on it. Pujols career numbers are astonding. As in unreal great. Considering batting average, home runs, rbi's better than Mays, better than Aaron, better than Mantle. Take what Pulols as done up until now and project it out and you get numbers like those of Ruth, Williams and Musial.
It looks like the Marlins are out of the Pujols race so they have spent big on Reyes and Bell. Now also Mark Buehrle. They are also hot after CJ Wilson.

Has anyone else besides me noticed that Albert will be 32, or that his best years may be behind him? Not all that sure that the Angels are going to get their moneys worth, and will take a wait and see attitude.

I'm guessing that's the reason a lot of teams backed off.

To answer the original question, NO!

He got off to a horrible start last year and needed an Orb like close to finish with 30-105-.285; .859 OPS and +4.6 WAR. The HR total and BA were the worst of his career, and 2nd lowest in RBIs.

This year? 5 HR 19 RBI .240 BA .730 OPS and a meager +0.3 WAR. Clearly, the needle is pointing downward on Pujols. Fans of all other teams can be happy their team didn't sink all that money into Pujols. Meanwhile the team is off to an awful start with a 11-22 record.

While we felt the Angels overpaid for Pujols, they REALLY have overpaid for Josh Hamilton so far. The other day, 3 GIDPs and 2 strikeouts. Here's the 2013 numbers for Hamilton and Pujols:

Hamilton 10 HR BA: .210 Slugging: .384 OPS: .650 WAR: .01
Pujols 12 HR BA: .263 Slugging: .453 OPS: .787 WAR: 1.1

Nice way to spend that money, Artie.
