View Full Version : Why do Superfecta's sometimes pay on "all" for the 4th Horse

The 9th race at Mountaineer just concluded, and the results were:

9
2
10
5

However, the Superfecta was announced as 9,2,10 all, and the tote reads:

9-2-10-1-10

The other horses in the field finished behind the 5 horse. There was not a 6 way photo finish for 4th place. Why did superfecta wagers on 9,2,10 and anything else but 5 get paid?

Why do Superfecta's sometimes pay on "all" for the 4th horse?

Because no tickets were sold with the combination 9-2-10-5

That is clear answer.

I would have thought that the track would keep all the superfecta money, if nobody had the correct combination.

What other types of wagers can get paid out, when nobody has the correct ticket.

Just about ALL other types of wagers in accordance with rules/laws of the various jurisdictions.

Because no tickets were sold with the combination 9-2-10-5 Unselected combination. Because the track has to pay the wager off, they declare that position an "all".

I think some tracks actually have it in the rule book to allow consolation and carry-over for supers, but they never do it.

Maybe I'm dumb, but I always thought that it should be listed as ANY rather than ALL. One of my nicest surprises, was when I hit a $1 super at the lamented Woodlands that paid all in the 4th spot. The super came back at $400+ for all, naive me thought that I had all for one ticket, when actually it should be labeled ANY, since I had 4 horses in the 4th spot, I got paid 4 times for over $1700.

If anyone remembers in NY the harness shows from Yonkers and Roosevelt, the OTB pick 4..If there was a late scratch, the rule mandated that race be an "All" race. I actually hit my one and only P-4 at that time on an all race. Paid over $300 for a $3 wager...I was like 19 yrs old....I remember checking my ticket at least 387 times and the 2 mile drive back to OTB I was a long tailed cat in a room full of 3 year old kids. in 1979 that was all the money in the world.
