Stuff we do not talk about much, but part of life.
Got the cost of a direct cremation for myself $2600.00 (if I lock it today)
$7200.00 for a cremation with full services, now a non cremation service starts at $8000.00 and adds up fast!!! That is the avg. cost here in Austin,Tx.

My Dad's funeral in NJ two years ago was well over 10 grand, and he bought his plot about 20 years ago.

I have prepaid for my mother's funeral. She is 96.
She purchased her plot in 1968.
The prepayment (without plot) was $11,500.
The funeral sales rep said that the cost of funerals doubles every 8 years.
So when I can afford it, my wife and I are going to start prepayment plans.
It only makes sense.
While my mother will be buried someday, I will have to go for a cremation.
Cremations can cost $3000 and up.
The good news is that my mother's grave also allows for the placement of two urns.

I have my plot bought and paid for.
I'll pass on the service, as I'm pretty sure you guys here will go all out with tribute threads and stuff like that.

I KNOW a couple here will plan some sort of celebration when I'm gone!:D

Did you know that you can donate your body to science and they will pay for everything, then return the ashes to your loved ones after the fact?

All for free.

I paid for a cremation this year here in NJ. Total fee was $2,100. Did not include a fancy urn since ashes were to be dispersed.

Previously, I paid for a cremation in 2002. The increase in cremation costs from 2002 to 2011 was about $400. What really shot up was the cost of publishing an obituary. That cost more than tripled. I guess newspapers have to make up for lost advertisers somewhere.

BTW, you cannot be an organ donor AND donate to science. It is one or the other.

When my mother-in-law died 2 years ago, we called one of the companies listed at the Google link - she had already set it up. They picked up the body a couple of days later and about 3-4 weeks after that we received "the package."

Costco or Walmart will likely add a furnace to each store and cremations will become very affordable for everyone:)

Think about the convenience. Drop off your loved one, leave the car at the auto center for an oil change, and do your grocery shopping while you wait.

The only problem with the Wal-Mart Great Value Cremation Service is that the remains which are returned to you are only guaranteed to be "similar" to those of your loved one.

Dave,

I am doing the same but through a different service. http://www.biogift.org/index.html

I am posting so people know that they have a choice if they choose this route.

Be sure to let us know when you go.
Remember (as Yogi said), you should always go to other people's funerals, or else they won't come to yours.

Instead of buying one now wait until you are older and purchase a final expense life insurance policy... its a lot easier than pre-paying and what you pay now won't matter anyway as the home will gouge you (family) for more money after you have passed.

I'm telling you a much smarter avenue is a small life insurance policy. I've seen a lot of very unethical funeral homes/services in my line of work.
