Mr sheriff Withlock is a Liar:

why dont tell the truth, why this sheriff never said, that his deputies come in 2 helicopters with a heavy firearms and point this arms to kids and womens, and why he dont say-his officers handcuffed mothers in front of his chlidrens and forced this HISPANIC people to wait for more of 6 hours on the outdoor floor, and why he never talk about the money seized to legal workers,i been there and never see any professional timekeeper i have a lot of evidence, videos and pictures, maybe this incompetent and racist sheriff and his deputies need to work for a hollywood production with Stallone.

Mr Sheriff wait in your seat the complaints with proof of my words.

Maybe your county need more money for equipment and officers but this is the wrong way...

They wont tell that part of the storie because they don't wont people to know how raceist they really are but the people do need to know the truth about what they really did to them and how they was treated cause from what I herd about it they had kids on the ground too and how they treated them like a pack of wild dogs. Them horses are not harmed at all. And they took all them peoples money and made them put it in one garbage bag and they where only there to watch the horse race so ask them why did they take all them peoples money that was not involed in the whole thing cause they was spanish people and they know they wouldn't do nothing about it

How is this of value to a horseracing website when this state doesn't even have horseracing? In other words, this is a gambling ring, a local bust by local law enforcement. Real big news to handicappers and fans of the sport.

I have the feeling the posting of the comments is simply to enable readers to realize the poster is of the belief that the entire state of Georgia's population is ignorant and racist.

Keep in mind, there's racism and ignorance throughout the world. The original poster's in Israel!

On another continent . . . and a pretty good ways from northeastern Georgia. A useless thread mixed with poor intent.

I think you're reading way too much into this Grits.
We talk racing here, and the Georgia authorities shut down an illegal racing entity. I'd like to know more about it.
Using comments from others posted below the article to try to figure the OP's intent is a stretch if ya ask me.

Its an illegal local gambling ring. Posting the comments allows you to learn exactly what about the original topic . . . .

Sorry, Phantom, I don't agree.

My only final thought.

Authorities who raided the site on Sunday said they found up to 300 people and an elaborate race track with fencing, a starting gate and professional timekeeping equipment.

I hope their bush track had a better timer than Gulfstream!!

Some of the folks of Georgia want to build and make available a thoroughbred racetrack and bring horseracing to their state. But, THIS is not the way to get one's foot in the door of the state legislature.

Nothing in the article is bad - only in the comments section.
I thought it was interesting to see what is going on about horse race betting.
What does the poster living in Israel have to do with anything?

I don't know, but hopefully, he's got a TwinSpires account.

I posted the comments not because I wanted to portray Georgia's authorities as uniquely racist or backwards, but simply to show that there was apparently more to the story than was reported in the rather antiseptic article.

If it's much like the Kentucky Derby, maybe they can hold the Derby there next year; have a more manageable field. And Veitch is available for consulting . . .

Looks like running the track wasn't all they're in trouble for.

He says that the evidence shows an impressive, albeit illegal, gambling ring that gambled on the horses and also had rooms that had casino table games like craps. They also sold wine and beer, a charge that Sheriff Whitlock will hurt extra because the suspects were selling without a liquor license and selling on Sundays.

Nothing different from betting on hound dogs swimming through a pond. I've done it before, for a little fun. And we were all drunk. It's only legal if the state gets their piece of the action.

I don't see what the problem is, as long as nobody gets hurt. You can get robbed easily or shot dead walking out of Hollywood Park. That's the place that should be raided.

Is it just me or doesn't it read like this track was indoors?

That would be fun to see

Btw, Drf just cut a formulater deal for Georgia PP's

Kansas used to have outlaw tracks. I believe Texas did too. I talked to guy who ran some QH horses at an outlaw track in Kansas. He said it was one big con game. The races were fixed.

A raid on an illegal( IN Georgia) racing, gambling and alcohol service sans licenses ring and that gives rise to a political comment with the race card thrown in to boot?...Sheesh.

Blue Ribbon Downs was the worst-kept secret in Oklahoma for over 20 years before pari-mutuel wagering was legalized.

Used to be a track like that in Louisiana called Quarter Pole Downs. Supposedly the locals showed up with entry fees which made up the race purse. I stopped there (Rayne, LA) sometime about 4-5 years ago. The track was still there (for training purposes) but no more racing as the State Racing Commission would not allow the activities. I have some photos on one of my older laptops.

I know there about a half a dozen places in Illinois that run a day of thoroughbreds under non-parimutuel conditions. Not sure if locals bet among themselves. Purse money comes from the state.

Another place of this type (Quarter Horse only) for interested parties to check out on the internet is Las Palmas Downs in the deep south of Texas.

Joe Talamo rode there.
He is not a Cajun (he's from Marrero, a suburb of New Orleans) but would make the 2.5hr drive to ride in Rayne.
Randall Toups and I'm sure many other EvD jocks have ridden there.

A book called Cajun Racing, which came out a few years ago, details a lot of the bush tracks around Lafayette (where i live).
As far as i know the Quarter Pole is the last of the bunch.
