This image dated May 19, 1973 supposedly shows Secretariat on May 19, 1973 winning the Preakness. It's stamped with official and impressive looking markings such as the date, wire house ownership and photo particulars.

The horse in the photo is clearly not Secretariat: it doesn't even have Meadow Stable's famous silks and Secretariat won the Preakness with program number 3.

The three horses in the picture are Ecole Etage, Torsion, and Sham (numbers 6, 5, and 1, respectively) who were running 1-2-3 going into the first/clubhouse turn (as the writing on the picture indicates). Secretariat (not in the picture) was still last at that point, and just beginning his explosive last-to-first move around the turn. (If the seller of the photo is claiming that it depicts Secretariat winning the Preakness, he is (as you noted) misidentifying the horses, as well as the point in the race at which the photo was taken.)

It may be, however, the top three heading into the first turn of the 1973 Preakness just before Secretariat made his sweeping move to the lead. After a quarter mile the chart shows the 6 horse (Ecole Etage) 1 1/2 ahead of the 5 horse (Torsion) which was 1/2 ahead of the 1 horse (Sham). Torsion was the only starter not wearing blinkers.

That's pretty impressive from both of you guys.

Secretariat was 6th at the start and assumed control only abouts the 1/2 call.

The seller is key word spamming. He should use your guys description!

Anyway that's a nice shot of Sham. Torsion, I believe has some success as a stud.

What I find amazing is the lax security. People allowed to run right up to the inside rail. How things have changed.
IN my opinion, Secretariat had the most smooth and effortless action of any thoroughbred race horse..
Big Red was indeed a "tremendous machine".
