View Full Version : Would you bet on barrel racing?

The latest article on Gretna Racing's attempt to receive approval for parimutuel wagering on barrel racing got me to thinking. Isn't there more opportunity for 'fixing' in an event where competitors perform one after another rather than all together?
Barrel racing is a rodeo-like event in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. It is popular in several parts of Florida, and in numerous other states.

And if Gretna gets approval for this, will someone try to run parimutuel wagering on show jumping next?

Bad idea; robustly opposed by every racing entity imaginable. Just a ploy to get some kind of gambling venue going up there.

I think it would be similar to Jai alai

and could increase purses so that riders
could buy horses for $200,000 rather than $50,000

Not anymore. At one time I probably would have. After all, I have bet on whether an egg would fry on the sidewalk or not. (it will, if the temperature is at least 108 in the shade and the egg is the sun. I won the bet.)

Yes, but it would depend upon the surface and whether or not there would be full fields. The takeout would have to be 14% or less, and no whips or drugs allowed. Plus, I would require Trakus to insure that the barrels wouldn't be moved to favor certain competitors. And no racing on Monday nights when the game is on.

Probably not at first. But the gambler inside me would eventually crave it. Never thought I'd bet greyhounds or jai-alai while in Southeast Florida...but yeah, I did.

Are there different distances?
Always looking for a good stretchout horse with class :)

Seriously though, you could build a set of pp's with pace intervals/calls to each barrel (maybe a turn time? :D ) and final times as well. The run up would be crucial!
It could be done, but then again, the west coast racers would be running on poly most likely, and......nevermind.

Bottom level claimers.Wow... that is a heck of a video.

I guess there is no weight limit for barrel racer jockeys.

What's next, guess the attendance ? Or on giveaway days, it would be guess the # of spinners.

This is a desperate idea for a dying sport. It is not going to work. Everything that depends on pari mutuel betting to pay the bills is in trouble these days.

A gambling venue? Like a race track or something?

Just kidding. It's all about getting a card room up and running.

I don't understand why you are not allowed to gamble on anything you want to.

As a rodeo fan, it's good to see barrel racing even mentioned.

But it wouldn't be much fun to bet on. It's all about the horse, and the best horse usually wins. Charmayne James rode Scamper to eleven consecutive national titles. Eleven! Scamper once won an event even after completely losing both bridle and bit. For over a decade one would have been hard pressed to find anyone to fade a bet against Scamper.

My wife wonders why they call it barrel racing when the barrels never move.

Looks like things have moved ahead, despite some controversy.

Sounds like about 50 or so people showed up to bet, I wasn't able to find results or handle information anywhere.

I read it is because the Oklahoma Indian tribe wants to open a poker room and then casino in Florida.

2 months (Dec 2011 - Jan 2012) parimutual meet and then they can apply for card room license as 2 years consecutive use of parimutual license.

barrel racing does not need much infrastructure - track and backside are 'non-existant' and horses have no problem competing 4 times per week.
