Is there a specific amount of purse value for G1, G2 and G3 races? Is there a minimun for each category?

I think it's $100k for G3, $150k for G2 and $250k for G1.

I don't think Purse has anything to do with it, they are set based on the previous years runners.

Otherwise why would the 2yr old Filly Turf race by a Grade 2, and the BC FM Sprint be Grade 1 with same purse in the BC?

For the United States for 2011, the American Graded Stakes Committee set the following minimum purse requirements for each grade level:

Grade 1 - $250,000
Grade 2 - $150,000
Grade 3 - $100,000

Hope this information helps!

Absolute joke, G1's should be a million minimum, that might make a G1 worth something and get rid of those phony G1's.

And that's just the minimum, right? For example, just because a race runs for more than $100K, that doesn't mean it's automatically a G3, right?

Correct - the grading has to come from a committee of some sort....not purses.

Purse do not determine grade. Graded status us granted by a committee based on such things as previous winners, etc. Min purses are only a requirement, not a definition.
