Having liver cancer certainly puts "Smokin Joe" in a world of hurt....I certainly feel for the guy...
I met Joe briefly in the mid 70's, at a place named the Thunderbird Lounge, in South Amboy, NJ, when he was playing the bar scene with a newly formed group of his called "The Knockouts"...Smokin Joe was the lead singer, and he wasn't all that bad at it....I used to be a street corner doo whopper myself, so when he was on break, I told him so, and then we harmonized a few bars together doing a Smokey Robinson tune from the fifties.....Joe seemed a very down to earth and approachable person...I got a kick out of our encounter....
I wish him success in his battle for extended life...
best,
Marshall Bennett

best,
Believe he was spending more time with the music scene than in the ring training before his Foreman bout, and paid dearly for it.
Only wish the best for ol smokin Joe. He's quite seriously ill from what I gather here locally.

Met Joe in the 70's when he was in town for something to do with son Marvis. He (or limo driver) confused Baltimore's famous crab house "Obrycki's" with a local pub in my 'hood and showed up at "O'Brady's". As Lotta Kash pointed out, a very down to earth guy.
I remember well his commercials for Magna Seal doors. Not sure if that was a local product or not. Joe was a pretty funny guy, although it's fair to say he was not a master of the English language.
