Age 87, in Hospice care.

A true ambassador for both the harness and thoroughbred industries.

He truly saw it all and did it all throughout his 50+ years involvement in the horse racing industry.

"G'nite all..."

Very sad news. Loved him with Spencer Ross on the old Channel 9 show here in New York. I hope his suffering was brief. RIP Stan.

RIP, Stan. I, too, remember him and Spencer Ross on WOR-TV, Ch. 9 back in the day.

We sure lost one of the, "BEST EVER FRIENDS" of horse racing....Sad day..

I always enjoyed his most insightful and passionate articles, stories, as well as his genuine and sincere promotion of the sport of horse racing...Stan was as knowledgeable about this game of ours, as any man..

He will be missed by many, and I will be one of them......Time marches on...

best,

Tom

I remember speaking to Stan @ year and a half ago about Nickawampus Leroy and we had a real good laugh. I'm glad I was able to tell him how much I appreciated his contribution to the sport.

He was a great ambassador for harness racing. I am a t'bred fan now but my formative years in my teens during the 1980s were spent enjoying harness racing at The Big M, trips to YR in August when Big M closed, and watching a lot of racing on TV including that OTB show where they featured the OTB Pick 4. Revolutionary! In addition to the "that's ok" when the show price was > place, they also played interesting music on that show. The theme to the YR show was "I believe in Yonkers" and the Roosevelt Raceway was some wild disco music. Then they'd play "Fool In the Rain" or some other sounds while showing the prices. Here's a clip. There's a bunch others on YouTube.

He also used to do a pretty good job of calling the Hambletonian before it came to the Meadowlands. Also was a pretty good handicapper on the Roosevelt/Yonkers shows. He will be missed.

The Internet is an amazing thing. Thanks for posting BombsAway I didn't see your link. It's hard to explain how happy I was when I heard these shows come on. Thanks Mr. Bergstein. Goodnight All

I did the WOR-TV show with him and Spencer a few times, and John Dockery once. Stan was the ambassador. He really should have been the commissioner of harness racing, something that is sorely needed.

He fought at Normandy on D Day, something I didn't know about him. Classy guy. As a on-air personality covering Harness Racing, he excelled. But he tirelessly promoted the sport his whole life.

I echo the comments of all who posted in this thread. But your post, Alhattab - especially the 3rd sentence - hit me right between the eyes.

Stan Bergstein. The man played a big roll in helping me find one of my greatest passions.
