Those Aussies are so full of shit. It's a handicap and in any handicap entries are decided by weight, i.e the top 24 horses in the weights get to start. So they saddle the Europeans with heavy weights and give the Aussie horses low weights, then bitch that they can't get into their own race. Look at Verminator, a G1 winner, he is carrying 4.5lbs less than the English horse Manghari, whose only claim to fame this year is a 3rd in the Yorkshire Cup G2.
Check out the entries and the weights assigned... http://melbournecup.racingandsports.com.au/pdf/2011%20Emirates%20Melbourne%20Cup%20Elimination%20 Order%20241011.pdf
Look at the last two columns.... the have the ex-Coolmore horse Midas Touch as 3rd in the weights based on his 2nd in the St Leger almost 14 months ago. The damn horse hasn't run over 9f in over a year, yet he is supposed to carry 7lbs more than a Verminator who is a recent G1 winner at 12f?? like wtf?

The Verminator won his G1 on 1st October after weights were released on 13th September. When The Verminator won his G1 race he was odds of 20-1 carrying equal bottom weight. Before this his biggest win was a Listed Stakes race at a provincial track. That was his only stakes win up till then, the rest of his wins were all in restricted class. So his assigned weight looks fair. Then he got a 2kg penalty for winning the G1 race on Oct 1st which again looks fair. He has the correct weight

They probably should put more weight on the better horses in the Melbourne Cup than they do. Last 10 years or so they have generally been too soft on the better horses

Yes, The Verminator has won only one graded race. So has Unusual Suspect, who won the Hollywood Turf Cup last year ... a (somehow) Grade 1 race a week after the Breeders Cup Turf. That one win landed Unusual Suspect the 8th spot on the original weights, assuring him of a spot in the Melbourne Cup. Does that sound right, compared to The Verminators one win earlier this month in Sydney's biggest race at the same distance?

You can't get a price on horses 20-24, they are coupled in the betting, all trading as 2nd fav.
