Hey, welcome. It's kind of difficult to answer your question. A track you consider good, could be a disaster for others. Right now, I'm personally doing well with Penn National, Mountaineer Park and Remington Park. I'm pretty bad with the synthetic surfaces, so I've been staying away from those. Honestly, my favorite winter track is Aqueduct. I always enjoy that one. What I recommend is for you to test a few tracks with your style of play and stay with the ones that give you the best results. I hope this helps.

Tampa and Gulfstream in Florida are open all winter, Aqueduct is another good track during the winter months.

The inner can be very chalky, especially when the rail really heats up. Tampa is good, Turf Paradise I like, Turfway usually has nice large fields (but also can play speed biased)

Fair Grounds and Delta Downs are winter meets.

Tampa and the Fairgrounds have been good winter tracks for me. Oaklawn starts in late January is also good. The northern winter tracks have had a problem with field size in recent years. I wouldn't bet counterfeit money at Parx, but that just me.

When will you stop putting your foot in your mouth?

Are YOU REALLY talking about the FG whose 2011 HANA track rating is below the Big A's. The same track that has 25% takeout for the P3, 4, 5, and 6. The track that is subsidized by slots which you SELECTIVELY hammer.

http://www.horseplayersassociation.org/hanatrackratingsbyoverallscore2011.html

Lets not forget Tampa with their poker room and slots sooner than later now that Florida has approved barrel racing as a pari mutuel wager.

Aren't these two tracks part of the group that YOU say should stand on their own two feet because teachers, policemen, and other public service employees are being laid off?

Unless I interpreted this wrong YOU are PART of the PROBLEM sleeping in the same beds as these tracks.

You also said you don't watch baseball but comment in there also. Maybe I'm just "thick" your so called "logic" and analysis befuddles me to no end.

I have a better idea since you have criticized almost every track in the country. Give up the horses and play bingo in a local hall near your home.

You can't have your cake and eat it also Mr. Goren.

oaklawn is a good honest track in my opinion as is gulfstream, tampa and my personal favorite the "big A"...With aqueduct you must be selective, when the speed bias does appear good prices can be had before the public catches on. thats when improving speed horses with the inside posts can beat horses with better figs......I am hoping with the opening of the casino coming at the opening of the meet the purse increases should attract larger fields and perhaps persuade the stables that normally go to gulfstream to leave a small string behind

The OP wanted to know tracks for the winter. This thread is not about HANA ratings or anything of the like. If you have a personal problem with Robert, PM him.

I also, posted FG as a possible winter track, wanna bash me too?

Whatever the take out is, you have the odds to tell you if a bet is worth it or not. I would rather bet into a 25% take out at a track I understand than a 15% that I can't pick my nose at.

I agree with you, of course, Tom, but, then, the higher the take, the less often you're likely to get overlay odds.

You can't have your cake and eat it also Mr. Goren.Every track in the country could be improved greatly and there is no almost about it. I do not play pic 3, 4, 5, or 6. I play tracks where I do well, but these day I don't play much. Racinos are bad for horse racing as a whole. Some of them do a better job of putting on bettable cards than others. If I were to visit either Tampa or the FG, I would not spend any of my time there betting the horses. A live poker or blackjack game beats a live horse race every time. If you visit a racino, you see that most people feel the same way. That is because the casino puts out a better product. Hell, most people even prefer slot machines to racing. Unfortunately for horse racing, it is not even close. If I was 20 instead of 63, I would not even give horse racing a second thought. I started betting horse in the 1960s and it still holds some attraction for me although it grows less by the year. Between 2002 and 2005 I did not bet a single race because of I was playing online poker. If online poker ever becomes legal again that will probably happen again unless horse racing changes dramatically.
I stand by recommendations of the Tampa and the FG. They are as good as it gets in the winter months for my handicapping methods. Yes, they could be improved a lot, but if I am going play, they are what I am stuck with.

My rebuttal was about Robert's stance on slot assisted tracks and the money being better spent on cops, teachers, firemen, etc. I know your a harness guy but ask him if he approves of any of the tracks you play that have that type of revenue then get back to me. Ask him if the slots money should go back to your favorite track. Look at his reply just above he agrees with me on the takeout part that he always talks about countless times.

Let me pose a question to you while I'm at it. How come you never told Robert to send me a PM every time he bashes NJ tracks? I'll tell you why, we're both big boys and have argued this for quite some time in PUBLIC without a SOLE (except you) asking that it be taken private.

I SUGGEST YOU SEND HIM A PM AND ASK. We even have gone off topic about a small little town that he and I both know about in Nebraska. While your composing it ask if he hold any animosity towards me. I certainly don't against him.

Robert and I are cool he just talks out of both sides of his mouth sometimes. I once asked him to post a link for poker and he did. ASK him if he was ever doubted by me again in that area. He's my poker guru.

You don't rant about slots at the tracks that's his big argument why would I bash you? Oh and btw I play FG also that wasn't the point of my post.

I am a fan of the Fair Grounds, Gulfstream, SA, and Tampa Bay. I know the takeout is not the best at FG and SA, but I win more there and even minus the takeout I still do better there than most other tracks so it is worth it to me.

Last Year, for the first time, i concentrated mainly on Gulfstream Park, in particular their $.50 Pick-5 with Low Takeout & 4-of-5 conso.
December at Mountaineer is usually good betting, as they close in
Jan/Feb, so owners/trainers are firing best last shots to cash.
Los Alamitos is Year-round, & Pick-4 pools are huge for size of track.

My point was about thread hijacking. Look at all the other posts and you won't find any other hijacks.

Now back to the OP's subject.

Anyone get in on calder?

Anyone get in on calder?

Calder runs through late November, as Gulfstream opens up first weekend in December, which I think is a big plus this year. It always seems after Florida Derby weekend the better horses move north so the loss of April isn't all that much.

As far as winter tracks go, I will continue playing Hawthorne, my home track which suffers from field size issues after November, as well as Gulfstream, Tampa, and a bit of Fairgrounds mixed in as well. Winter (which in racing I consider January to March) is probably my best time of year handicapping and wagering-wise, right next to that is the current season fall. Spring and summer...eh, not so much.

last winter FG was my top r.o.i track, topping TuP from the two previous winters.
