tonight's race via Black Caviar. The horse next to her has a history of acting up. it's a 5 horse field, so what they are going to do, is have black caviar in stall 4, an empty stall, then stall 6 with the horse that acts up.

I've never seen anything like that before

You want craziness, the favorite in the feature race tonight the 3 million dollar Cox Plate over 1m 1/4, is the 3yo Helmet. That's southern hemisphere 3yo. It would be like a 3yo going against older horses in MARCH in the northern hemisphere. He gets an 18lb break from the older horses in the WFA scale.

And along those same lines, there will probably be several horses in the Melbourne Cup that run a prep within a week or a few days of the 2 mile race. Check out the PPs of # 2 (Decarado, whose scratched tonight) in the Cox Plate. He ran in a 10 furlong race 3 days prior to the Melbourne Cup last year. If memory serves, there were at least two other horses that ran in that race, and came right back in the Melbourne Cup.

I'll be keeping my eye on # 1 (Efficient) in the Cox Plate. Had him when he won the Melbourne Cup back in 2007, but he's had some issues since that awesome performance...

Correction, he gets 21lbs from the 5yo+ and 18lbs from the 4yos. The 4yos get a 3lb break, I guess because it is early in the season.

Yeah, So You Think (who is coming to run in the Classic) started as favourite for the Melbourne Cup last year, finished 3rd. His prep for the Melbourne Cup involved winning the G1 CoxPlate 10 days before and then a week later winning the 1-1/4m G1 MacKinnon, just 3 days before the 2m Melbourne Cup. That's three races totaling 4 1/2 miles in 10 days.

Aussie ain't afraid to run his horses. You'd be locked up if you tried to do that in the states.

the only reason hamlet was favored was because of the insane weight break he got

MV Post race report: Race8 Lion Tamer - BROKE DOWN near hind leg

Robert Fischer

they quickened quite a bit here late.

King's Rose got punked because she was a punk
a little more forward than I wanted - possibly in respect to the vulnerable favorite, and just plain old breaking fairly well, but she got ate up a bit in traffic today. Some runners seem to usually get the best or worst of traffic, and today was not her day.

very hittable race with some logicals there . Winner Pinker Pinker was a REDICULOUS 30-1 and just a head back from my KEY horse 2back. Jimmy Choux ran VERY well for breaking through the barrier stall. Lesser horse from the same group Rekindled Interest finished logical 3rd(Kings Rose was superior, and Glass Harmonious would be used with)

Helmet came in here as the 3yoColt so he not only had the hype and hope coming in, he got the weight for age break. There were definitely some signs suggesting that he may be a little cheap here. A conservative odds figure (before having seen the race) - would put HELMET @ 9-2. There was about as much chance of Helmet being a complete noCount as there was of him being a worthy 6-5 shot. I have to find my replays site and get aussie organized mate, because that 9-2 would have been higher if I had watched helmet's previous races. Good opportunity to play against here.

not bad AUSSIES

did you notice on form, how as he stretched out (and would naturally be a bit closer to the pace), they were more than happy to go ON the pace itself and go for the WINs?

we have a couple major trainers who do that here, and even worse a sign is that move following a dissapointment where the horse was NOT tugging or pulling, but actually running in good rhythm off the heat of the pace.

in simple terms it's a horse that now NEEDS to make adjustments to get a favorable setup. And this is significant because these horses inevitably have MORE increases in adversity ahead.

the pace adjustment is just one of different go-to moves, and you may even see a big fig off of it, or even just lifetime E1 E2 and it deceives as an improvement.

keep in mind that the race went off like 10 minutes late

Anyone have any tips on how to handicap Australian racing?

toussaud
10-22-2011, 04:02 AM
the reason alot of american handicappers suck with Aussies, is because it's 2 totally different concepts of racing.

You have to keep in mind, in Australia, they literally race horses into shape over there. a horse might start out at 7F race, than a mile race, than a 9F race, and then a 10F race with the 10F + being the target. Handicappers used to the american style of horse racing get too caught up on who beat who last out and using so on and so forth.

Anyone have any tips on how to handicap Australian racing?

the capping seems to be the same, minimal form and all, but the wagering is more complex.

AUSSIE pools offered here are pretty small for the most part. This morning was nice because at least there was a moderate amount.
In general the pools seem to be behave as a typical small track with late being volatile. And there is a game within the game, where horses hot on alternative-sources(bookmakers, on track pools, etc...) become "MARKET MOVERS"... these horses may be bet late in OUR Aussie pools beyond value, or they may be "overlayed" in comparison with the alternative-pools. At times horses are used to hedge or even green-up as well. The only surefire way is for me to bet. If i bet a market-mover, it will get pounded late beyond value...:D
