Not defending this guy who obviously went overboard, but what exactly did the law expect him to do?

Allow these chicks to go hog wild on him...beating, kicking, slapping, punching...whatever they want until they had gotten their fill and left the store? And he's not supposed to try and defend himself?

How does he know that once they jump the counter (quite the aggressive move), one of them isn't about to pull a gun or a knife and take his life right there? One of them has already hit him, and the other is jumping over the counter...who the hell knows what's next?
