In a bid for legitimacy, poker sites and players are pushing for the federal government to legalize, regulate and tax online poker. Big-name casinos, sensing opportunity, have thrown their weight behind the idea

I expect some more info on this from the poker expert Mr. Goren.

There is nothing new in the article. I am not real hopeful that we see legal online poker soon. The push back from Christian conservative groups like the Focus on the Family will be hard to overcome.

No chance.

The story mentions Washington, D.C., has legalized online poker. It was only passed by the City Council, and there are countless hearings scheduled on the issue. It will never be allowed by the Feds.

Congress can KO that law whenever it wants. Once it gets close, they will step in and derail it. Just like the Feds did with the Delaware sports betting plan after they had cleared every legal hurdle.

Just need to set up some way to access the net and not be visible to the revenuers. Screw the US government - if people want to play poker on line, it is none of their GD business. And screw paying taxes on it.

Get the jack-boots of the US off our necks.

There are still plenty of poker rooms available for US players. None are anywhere close in size to PS or FT, but plenty of people from the US are playing everyday. I play on 3 different networks to get enough action to multitable effectively and on two of them get 40% rakeback.

After BF, most of the US based pros moved to either Canada or Mexico.

Legal online poker in the US (and there is some question as to whether poker actually is illegal or just the funding of it), will not happen without Harry Reid. Vegas will run US based poker, and Reid will only support it when Vegas gets what they want, which is no competition from overseas operators. Even if a bill were to pass the house, it will not come up for a vote in the Senate until Reid gets the okay from Vegas.

I think I need to go back and watch Casino again...wasn't Reid played by Dick Smothers?
