Ohio Muslim Inmates Sue Over Meal Preparation

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A death row inmate says the Ohio prison system is denying him meals prepared according to Islamic law -- known as halal -- while at the same time providing kosher meals to Jewish prisoners, according to a federal lawsuit that alleges a civil rights violation.

Condemned inmate Abdul Awkal says the prison system's failure to provide the halal meals is a restraint on his religious freedoms.

Awkal, 52, is scheduled to die in June for killing his estranged wife, Latife Awkal, and brother-in-law Mahmoud Abdul-Aziz in 1992, in a room in Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court.

Joining Awkal in the lawsuit is Cornelius Causey, 35, serving 15 years to life for murder and aggravated robbery convictions out of Hamilton County.

Give me a break. If they had followed Islamic law, they would not be in prison in the first place. I have real problem with inmates who suddenly get religious when they get behind bars.

In the Middle East, I'm not sure that they'd be in jail at all.
Thousands of "honor killings" of women are carried out each year over there.
It may be for a simple thing like refusing to wear a "Hajib" over the head.
In some countries these killings are carried out by juvenile members of the family as they will not receive severe punishment.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. It does seem that if you are convicted of murder you give up a lot of your rights.

That said...

Should a Catholic convicted of murder be denied communion? What if the Catholic convict wants wine? Must he/she be served wine with communion?

What if a person convicted of murder wanted to become Christian and be baptized? Should they be denied a baptism?
