With 10 minutes to go before first post, Finger Lakes suddenly announced that their TUE card was cancelled after the jock colony refused to ride.

WTF??

what reason did they give?

None. I watched their pre-race prattle and picks show, and everything was completely normal. Then with 10-15 minutes before first post, Tony Calo announced that the day's racing was cancelled because the jock colony was refusing to ride. No other explanation was given.

I guess you'd have to assume the issue is track condition, which was listed as good both today and yesterday. Over the weekend it was sloppy. There's been a lot of rain recently, but not so much the last couple days..

So since Calo made a point of announcing the jocks were refusing to ride, the assumption is the day's card was cancelled not because of the death of the jockey, but because FL was still going forward with the racing day, and the jockeys then refused in protest of that decision.

So glad they could fit this in the notification:

"The Casino floor at Finger Lakes will carry on operations as normal from 9 a.m. through 4 a.m., and simulcasting of various tracks throughout the country will continue as scheduled."

So, did I get this right, the guy died at home (reasons aside) and they cancelled the races because of that ?...Just asking, is all...

Osorio did have a mount on Tuesday, and he was still listed as the jock after the day's changes went out. I'm going to assume that the jockeys knew more about what happened before management did, and that's why the card was cancelled suddenly and attributed to jockeys refusal to ride. Or, as I said earlier, maybe management did want to go ahead with the racing day, and the jocks balked.

All pretty irrelevant in light of what happened.

Jockey Jose David Osorio was found dead in his Henrietta, N.Y., home 20 miles west of Finger Lakes Racetrack on Tuesday morning, an apparent suicide, according to two people who knew the rider. He was 34.

Finger Lakes officials canceled Tuesday’s racing program.

According to Jeff Smith, who until two months ago had worked as Osorio’s agent for approximately five years, Osorio was found in his basement by his fiancé, Brenda Ortiz. No other details were available.

“I’m really shook up, it’s mind-boggling to me,” Smith said. “He was a strong kid. You wouldn’t ever know if he had a bad day or not. I’m really devastated. I can’t see how he could take his own life.”

Jeremiah Englehart, a Finger Lakes-based trainer, said Osorio – whose nickname was “El Gato,” the Cat _ always seemed upbeat.

“He was a really, really good kid, always smiling,” Englehart said. “You’d never think that this was something you’d run into with him.”

Englehart said that Osorio and Ortiz had two children together and that Ortiz had a third child from a previous relationship.

According to Daily Racing Form records, Osorio rode 421 winners from 3,228 mounts in his career. He first rode in 1996 – going 2 for 114 – but didn’t ride again until 2002. His best year statistically was 2006 when he rode 79 winners from 482 mounts. In 2007, he won his only stakes, the Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies, with Say Toba Sandy.

Osorio ranked 15th in the Finger Lakes jockey standings in 2011 with 30 wins from 197 mounts.

BUMPed to ask if anyone knows what's going on at FL today.. just tuned into their live stream, and instead of being on their 5th race like they should be, they still haven't even run the 3rd..

..and just as I was writing that, Tony Calo announced that the jocks are refusing to ride, and the rest of the card is cancelled. No bad weather, and track condition was good.

Oy.

DRF reporting that FL cancelled after jocks refused to ride becuz of poor weather:

http://www.drf.com/news/belmont-finger-lakes-among-four-tracks-cancel-due-bad-weather

Which is weird since the weather was not poor. The storm creating havoc along the east coast is well to the southeast of western NY, and there has been no precipitation here today or yesterday.
