I see this story has been known since this morning (according to another thread)...I had just heard about it and it appears as "Breaking News" on the Fox Sports website tonight...

They're making it look as if Francona made the decision himself to leave, but I'm not sure I buy that...

I posted without even reading the article that you posted. Up here in Chicago both Francona and Epstein were the feature sports story in the Chicago Sun Times as both possibly coming here to the Chicago teams. Francona to manage the White Sox and Epstein to take over the GM duties for the Cubs. They have numerous "sources" divulging info on both them as to why they might be leaving. In Francona's case the source had said that he was tired of dealing with whatever the situation was like in Boston and that he would ask them to not pick up his option.

I don't think Francona ends up on the South Side. Reinsdorf doesn't like to pay his managers much money. A more likely scenario will be Sandy Alomar Jr getting the job. I think he will be a good manager some day.
