Hi,

I have a very basic question - is there any rule on the minimum number of horses required for trifecta and superfecta wagering? for example, if there is only 4 horses in a race, is superfecta wagering offered in general? similarly, if there is only 3 horses in a race, is trifecta wagering allowed?

thanks,

There is no general rule. Every jurisdiction has their own rules, as spelled out in the regulations passed by the local racing commission, which is usually a state entity.

Even more confusing is that some jurisdictions have pools where there's a minimum number of betting interests to open the pool in the first place, and a minimum number of betting interests to keep the pool open after late scratches. For example, at Bingo Downs you may need 6 horses entered to open the triple pool, but if it scratches down to five horses, you can still bet the triple, and they'll only refund the pool if it scratches down to four.

Not only that, in the NYRA they allow 5 horse tri's...But if it's a 6 horse field and 1 is scratched (even a gate scratch), they refund tri tickets (even though it's a 5 horse field). It's a head scratcher.

A few years ago, Gulfstream offered a trifecta in a 3-horse race.

Since the trifecta takeout was higher than the exacta takeout, you had to be dumber than a bag of hammers to bet the trifecta.

Yet a number of people DID bet the trifecta, lending credence to the argument that some bettors JUST DON'T CARE about takeout.

A lot of bettors are hardly aware of takeout, let alone how it affects them.

you need to substitute betting entries for horses

as 4 horses with 2 sets of entries (1, 1A, 2 2A) will not have a possibel tri or super

but as said, each state has their own rules
