Apparently there was a ghastly crash at the Reno Air show today that involved quite a few audience members dying. RIP to the deceased, and I hope no one here knew anyone who was over there.

I've heard people say that it's very cool and neat and all, but it seems fairly common for the planes to piledrive into the runway, or barrels into the crowd. I guess I don't like planes enough to go to a place where people seem to die in front of you every couple years.

The pilot, Jimmy Leeward, was 74-years old and was well known in the Ocala area. He ran an "air ranch" south of town that I pass pretty much every night on my delivery route.

I agree with the OP about air shows, in general. Prefer static displays of vintage aircraft, etc.

I have been to an airshow here in southern Lousiana. I was amazed at how close the jets were allowed to fly in proximity to the crowds. After all, they are mechanical and we all know mechanical items do break, Add in the possibility of pilot error, and well it just didnt seem right to me. As of this day, I have yet to see another show outside of youtube or another form of media.
Sad day for all of those families who went just to see a good show!
Hopefully, (which I am sure will be reviewed) future air shows will keep the crowds at a much greater distance as well as keeping the flight plans distanced as well.

Get this...

Yesterday morning, I got a call from a friend of mine who is a casino exec saying he had two free tickets to the air races. The seats where in the VIP section (where the plane crashed).

I was out at the time and did not hear the message until I got back. When I called, he said that he had given the tickets to someone else. (I do not know their fate at this time.)

I feel like someone who missed their plane (and it crashed) because I would have gone.

Very odd feeling.

I actually knew someone who was scheduled on a flight back from Chicago back to L.A., I believe - back in the 70's.

She overslept at her hotel and missed the flight.

I met her later and asked her how the experience had affected her. She said that she would never fly again.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A World War II-era plane crashed at a West Virginia air show and burst into flames on Saturday, though officials did not immediately know of any injured spectators.

A horse could jump the rail and run over you at the races.

An Indy car could hit the wall and send debris into you at the auto races.

You could get hit with a foul ball in the face and die at a baseball game.....etc., etc.........

that being said.....I DO NOT FLY!

May have been the American DC-10 that dropped an engine on the runway on takeoff. It rolled over and crashed killing everyone. Believe it may have been LA bound.

all they have to do, put up a roof, then along with signs, they should direct people to sit under the roof.

this could help people such as justly-ralph and Pa from being hurt.
