View Full Version : Seperating distances
Ive been handicapping for decades, but does anyone have the right way to seperate distances to compare when a runner changes the distance they run?
Such as: 4F to 5f (super sprints)
5 1/2 to 6f (sprints)
6 1/2 to 7 1/2 (long sprints)
1m to 1 1/16m (routes)
1 1/8 + (endurance routes)
thanks in advance

I consider anything from 7 to straight, one-turn miles to be long sprints. One turn miles in my book aren't routes although sometimes the handicappers at Churchill and Arlington (which have one-turn miles out of the chute) make it seem like it.
I don't differentiate between routes and "endurance" routes but consider anything above 1 1/2 mile to be marathon. 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 I guess could be considered classic distances. Anything two turns is a route to me.
well what about the 6 1/2f (two turn) races at CT & FPX ?
this is why i posted this thread b/c after 30 years of handicapping, I still get confused to what is the ideal guideline (if there is one)

I don't understand the confusion. Three seperate groupings at CT: 4.5; 6.5/7.0; and 8.5/9. A 6.5/7.0 horse isn't not necessarily a 8.5/9.0 horse.
