And the first pick 4 was 1-1-6-8! If that wasn't meant to be I don't know what is!

I guess someone else in media land thought it was a little more than coincidental.

I think the S&P future closed at 911 the year after (from memory).

What are the odds?!

On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the first three winners at Belmont on Sunday were horses wearing the numbers 9, 1 and 1.

The fact that it happened at a local track that served as one of the staging areas for workers and emergency vehicles in the days following the destruction of the World Trade Center made the outcome even more stunning.

Jacobson has them a tad higher.

“The odds were probably about a million to one,” said David Jacobson, the trainer at Drawing Away Stable, which owns Say Toba Sandy and Wishful Tomcat, the day’s first two winners.

"Maybe you and Jacobson know something I don't know."

Jacobson has them a tad higher.
Jacobson had the odds at a million to one,but with fields of 8,6,and 7 horses
the raw odds were 210-1[7x5x6-1],and with 2 even money winners and a 6.90 2nd choice the true odds were even lower. This was a case of a little hyperbole, which gained Belmont some media attention, nothing astounding,or supernatural.
A stranger gambling 9/11 linked event, was the New York lottery daily win 3 number actually coming up 911,on 9/11 2001.

Here's another question. What were the odds on this happening BEFORE the races were drawn?

Probably pretty high.

Probably pretty high.
The raw odds of it happening before the draw were 288-1[add in the 2 scratches in the first 2 legs],and during the actual sequence 210-1 it'd be 60,480-1[288-1 x 210-1],which is far away from a million to one.

But, at least one of the races drawn had to have at least 9 betting interests. I think your odds only work out if leg 1 has 9 betting interests. Not all first races of the day draw to 9 betting entrants, so with that said, its hard to figure out the true chances of this happening days before the races were ever drawn.

You are correct.

Maybe I should apply to be a placing judge at Kentucky Downs!

You guys are thinking way to hard. The odds of it happening were obviously 8.3-1. Hence the $18.60 payout.
