Yo, PA, any advise?

Same here, I hope the power comes on, and FAST.

Odd coincidence, I was watching the CNBC "Enron - smartest guys in the room" tonite, flipping back n forth between the Pokie State-Arizona game. As I watched it for the 2nd time I thought how great it was Cali wasn't exposed to rolling blackouts anymore caused by a pack of criminals....lo and behold when the show was running, they experienced a blackout

Yo, PA, any advise?By day three, you will be cursing anything and everything related to power and the outage. Let's hope it doesn't go that far.

Recommend buying a generator at some point so that if it lasts longer than a couple of days you'll have some power. And you'll have it in the future when the big one hits.

Also, an inverter to get 100 volt AC off of your car can come in handy -- along with a few long extension cords. You can at least power a lamp with it. 400-800 watt inverters are common, I believe.

Power down to the South and east of Aliso Viejo, looks like everything west and north is ok. Friends in the affected areas are getting e-mails ( on their smart-phones) saying power restored maybe sometime tomorrow.

Clearly, everyone has experienced a power outage. Imagine if you will, I had to drive to the far east end of this county from here on the coast. For 20 miles, in a major metro area, it was pitch black. It was a huge area without power.

I just drove back here to the coast and spotty areas are coming back on. Big problem were people trying to get gas earlier. No dice.

Cash is nice to have. No plastic.

Candles, booze and a guitar work wonders.

(PA: I can't imagine going through this as long as you did.)

Hey Mack......
Understanding that the initial investment is a little steep, a whole house generator might be an alternative.
Of course if this is a one or two time thing, I probably wouldnt go this way.
But here in the gulf coast, with the threats every year of hurricanes, I have a natural gas one. Works great! If we lose power for more then like twenty seconds to the panel, it automatically kicks on.
Now if I can just get it to reset the clocks ....

I remember the ice storm of 1991...no power for 5 days, others a lot longer.

It sucked. Totally.
I feel your pain.

My power came back on at 2:15 this morning in San Juan Capistrano. Had to use the BBQ to fix dinner last night.

My area of San Diego lost power for about 23 hours. No big whoop especially since you don't need electricity to play golf -- which is where I was when the outage started.

It was kind of interesting to see how the neighbors handled things. Most just took it in stride. Some used it as an excuse to party. One guy over a block away had some kind of BBQ going -- the red glow from his back yard gave it away. Another idiot decided it was a good time to light firecrackers and to launch some rockets. Most of the kids on the block were just outside enjoying the cool evening and having fun -- no school on Friday!

Me, I used the relatively dark skies (damn that moon) to give my son a little lesson on star and constellation identification. Then, a DVD on the portable player and an early bed time.

Have to wonder how many of the otb sites got knocked out, there are many in the affected area. Or do they all have alternate power sources that keep them running? Del Mar, San Clemente mini, 3 Indian casinos, 2 in Indio, Perris, all satellite wagering locations. California did not race Thursday and the other day tracks should have been done, but there was still something going on somewhere. How awful, imagine walking up to get down on a horse that goes on to win, only to suddenly have all the lights go off. :bang:

Called a friend of mine and he said that his family had been busy eating all the ice cream before it melted.

Gracias, n2tg.

After driving back last night I fired up the laptop with 3G, it warned me it was about to hibernate for lack o' power. Dig. The exact second the laptop died the power came back on at exactly 1AM. Presto, bingo.

I felt like Marshal Brodien.
