i just read about the rule change where the kickoff is from the 35 yard line instead of the 30. that should benefit the team that has the better offense. they changed the spot because there were alot of injuries during those runbacks. and this will almost automatically result in a touchback every time the ball is kicked off. to me it looks like it will benefit the better offenses, they will have the ball more often and run up the scores. most of the time those teams are favorites and they will be able to run up the scores.

if i were betting football, i would lay the points every game for the first few weeks of the season until the oddsmakers adjust for the new rule

since the average start for an offense is beyond the 20 yard line, it would be less likely that a team that starts on the 20 yard line would score. when you give the ball to the better team more often, they are going to score more often. and when they kick from the 35 yard line they are going to stop the other team from scoring more often.

i might be seeing this wrong. but i doubt that.

This rule changed in March and its a mistake IMO.

i have to say you are 100% right. the games will be decided alot earlier and people will be changing their channels faster. the rule change from what i see, penalizes the have nots and takes the excitement out of the game with a great kick returner becoming meaningless

Remember the kicking team is 5 yards closer. IMO kickers will learn to kick the ball higher and try to drop it between the goal line and the 5 yard line. If they can do this successfully, they should be able to be right on top of the kick returners when the ball is received with a greater chance of downing the recieving team inside the 20 and/or causing fumbles.

FACTS= agree w/ it or not, the NFL decided that eliminating kick-offs would reduce the chances for concussions (as well as hopefully delay the first NFL die on the field hit). Remember these are facts and not my opinion about the direction we should take the game. These are not opinions but rule changes made by the league.

Now, Lambo - I like how you took it to the next level to try and figure out the EFFECT of the rule changes.

I can be SLOW ON THE TAKE so bear with me, (and Lambo or anyone chime in if i get it wrong)

AVG STARTING YARD LINE FARTHER FROM GOAL = yes. this is pretty straightforward.

Will this cause worse scoring offenses to lose lopsided games because they score SIGNIFICANTLY LESS?? = good question:ThmbUp: I don't see it having much of this effect, unless a specific team ALSO tends to rely on the their KICKOFF RETURN game exceptionally much. i could be wrong.

MEDIUM EFFECTS=
this is ANOTHER BLOW to the running game, and to teams built on LINEBACKERS. Just more in a long long line. Passing teams will be less affected. Defenses built around nickle packages and speed rushers and coverage strong safetys will continue to thrive.

players will be safer

owners will not have to pay as much salary to special team specialists

perhaps the BIGGEST NFL TRADITION CHANGE = the multipurpose back lost a good bit of value. It wasn' that long ago that these types routinely competed for and won the Heisman trophy and went on to rush receive and return kicks in the NFL. A guy like Hester is relegated to occasionally returning a punt, and no longer being a factor in returns.
