Kids sell water on the sidewalk everyday outside of Saratoga. On KY Derby day all the neighbors participate by selling bar-b-que, renting out parking spaces in their lawns, selling drinks on the side walks.

What is so wrong with kids learning how to become entrepreneurs by running a lemonade stand?

The Inexplicable War on Lemonade Stands

I’m beginning to think that there’s a nation-wide government conspiracy against either lemonade or children, because these lemonade stand shutdowns seem to be getting more and more common. If you set up a stand for your kids, just be prepared for a visit from the cops.

In Coralville, Iowa police shut down 4-year-old Abigail Krstinger’s lemonade stand after it had been up for half an hour. Dustin Krustinger told reporters that his daughter was selling lemonade at 25 cents a cup during the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa (or RAGBRAI), and couldn’t have made more than five dollars, adding “If the line is drawn to the point where a four-year-old eight blocks away can’t sell a couple glasses of lemonade for 25 cents, than I think the line has been drawn at the wrong spot.”

Nothing. Probably the same people that want to remove God, the national anthem, or anything else that bonds the very moral fiber which is quickly becoming extinct in this country, are tied to this ridiculous crap.

Local governments are run by greedy, biased, ignorant people who love to tell everyone how to live their lives. From building codes to license fees, they prey upon people, not help them. The problem is people who work for a living and carry over half of this country on their back are too busy to run these little pockets of pretend importance.

Let's face it, all local governments good for is picking up garbage and plowing the roads. Anything else is far too complex for the pea brains to handle. Everywhere. Look at the once respected NY State Toopers - now reduce to nothing more than traffic ticket handlers. Rochester NY, over 50 crack houses - well known by everyone - yet the cops sit in traffic waiting to issue tickets. Good use of time, fellas - you jerks.

The excuse of sanitation over lemonade stands is so ridiculously stupid, I can only think of one person who would defend it.

I don't think liberals want kids to lear about self reliance and entrepreneurship, they want them to learn how to apply for food stamps and
other services.
How ya gonna keep em down on the liberal farm once they learn how to get along on their own...

I'm liberal on social issues, but I'm convervative on financial issues and I'm pro-business. I think this cuts across the liberal and conservative lines.

The idea of shutting down a kid's lemonade stand is just plain dumb.

Explain to me why, please. Why would a true conservative look upon these kinds of activities with disfavor?

It's more than dumb. Much more. It's tyrannical. The more government gets into people's personal lives, the fewer personal freedoms we have.

There was a story last week (and these kinds of incidents are on the increase!) about some church up in Pennsylvania (I think) who was hosting a fund-raising bake sale. Some agency came in and shut the sale down because the bureaucrats insisted that the pies and cakes be baked in commercial ovens. This, and many other examples that you would be able to find online, are great examples of government oppression -- no matter by what level of government -- municipality, county, state -- whatever.

We are witnessing the gradual but steady erosion of our individual liberties, yet it appears that most Americans are complacent or indifferent about their liberties. And I'm not surprised at this attitude. A couple of years ago when the TSA implemented its new rules for airport security, I stated back then that that was truly a watershed moment for this country. The outcry against the Feds should have been heard around the world. And the utter disgust toward them by Americans should have been read about around the globe! But what did we get instead? Sheeple allowing their persons to be violated and their bodies to put at medical risk by radiation -- all in the name of "national security". The vast majority of Americans allowed themselves to be violated and put at risk and greatly inconvenienced for no cause -- no wrongdoing. Americans were made to pay the price that the Muslim terrorists should be paying. The Muslims should have been the ones greatly inconvenienced. The Muslims should have been barred from this country. Legal alien Muslims should have been escorted to the airports and given one-way ticket home, etc., etc. Instead, the Muslims won because the sheeple allowed themselves to become victims! At this point in time, it's safe to say that what wrong with America is really stupid and ignorant Americans.

But it's not all bleak. A few Sundays ago, my church held a bake sale without incident or intrusion by any government agency. Further, I received no reports of illnesses or deaths due to the baked goods coming out of domestic ovens.

Here's a thought - ever hear of an outbreak of anything from a bake sale of lemonade stand?

How about a commercial outfit. Duh.

All governments are poison - at every level. Never trust any government on any issue - the all lie and they all serve only themselves, not you.

nothing more all-American than lemonade stands. Boxcar is right about this stuff being tyrannical.

Yeah, I heard about on Beck's show. I'm hard-pressed to decide anymore which government agency is more bold, audacious and belligerent: The IRS or now the EPA?

I read about that also. If I were them I would take the jobs to Mexico and tell BO to shove it.

That was my point... it isn't a convervative or liberal issue... it doesn't matter which way a person leans, almost everyone would agree it's dumb.

From the quoted link:

"This isn’t to say that ... don’t need any regulations at all, but many of the regulations that come down the pipeline are pushed by brick-and-mortar competitors who want to keep competition at a minimum."

Liberal has always meant free thinking and free trade. Who do you think is pushing the local councils and police into taking action - the parents or PTA? How about local and national illiberal business that have bought into monopoly event concessions. Who is it that bring endless patent, logo disputes to court; stop suppliers selling to weaker competitors; buy out and close down small competitors etc, etc that are killing the life blood of small business . You've got it - the same businesses that cry out for protectionism, non-regulation, except against competitors, and non-free trade.

I wish these posts did not always turn into liberal vs. conservative.

I think anyone would agree it is dumb to shut down a lemonade stand.

I would don't care if the kids were selling lemonade during the running of the Boston or NY marathons. Let young kids sell lemonade without worrying about having a permit or collecting taxes.

What is the government thinking -- that these kids are going generate enough tax revenue to save social security or eliminate the deficit?

ya know what is really amazing when you stop and think about it? In the middle of everything that is going on, those city officals had the time, energy and inclination to go after a kids lemonade stand and the people in charge said that is OK.

there is a reason for recall elections.
