according to blood horse, the total handle was only down .02% from last year. the attendance and handle ontrack was up though. when i compare saratoga to most other venues i find these numbers to be real good. personally i attribute that to a great racing office who knows how to write the best races to get the biggest and competetive fields. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/64664/after-28-days-saratoga-numbers-still-solid?source=rss

Turf races totaled 111, with 30 taken off the turf, compared with 119 on and 23 off in 2010.

Thats the difference there, more off the turf = smaller fields & less handle.

Since its 'obvious' that the economy is to blame for the downfall of racing in So Cal, this result is confusing to me. Is Saratoga Springs NY not part of the same american economy that Del Mar, Ca is?

In August, Saratoga and the capital region as a whole basically lives and breathes the flat track. It's a major part of every news cast, a lot of marketing campaigns, it's basically the thing to do.

The people who go there are not just racing fans, but also people just experiencing the experience. I feel that is why we don't see as much of a drop here than at other tracks.

Has this been true for the other boutique meets like OP and Kee?
