That's amazing.
In theory a Dead Heat is highly improbable, next to impossible.
In horse racing, it happens more than is likely, probably due to the imperfection of our measuring instruments.
A Triple Dead Heat, is really very very highly improbable, but it's amazing when it occasionally happens.

I wonder how many members here have ever seen that live? In all of my years going to the track it never happened on my watch. It would be interesting to know how many times this happens in a year.

I saw a triple read heat in the 70s at the race course here in Lincoln. Boomman posted that he saw it too.

It always happens due to the imperfection of our measuring instruments, at least until we can develop a photo finish camera that can resolve down to the thickness of an atom.

On average zero times a year. I believe all triple dead heats would get a mention in DRF and Blood Horse news, but I never see any.

I saw a triple dead heat at The Meadows (harness racing) a couple or three years ago. Not only was there a triple dead heat, but the fourth and fifth place horses were beaten just a nose.

There was a triple deadheat for show at Woodbine a few years ago. There was about a 15 minute tote delay so the computers could figure out all the payments.

At Saratoga Harness on February 18, 2008 (http://www.harnesslink.com/www/Article.cgi?ID=61185) (top photo below) and at The Meadows on March 24, 2009 (http://xwebapp.ustrotting.com/absolutenm/templates/?a=30989&z=1) (bottom photo below) there were triple dead heats for win.

I can't put my hands on the photo....I have it some where!.......but as a placing judge in the 90's at Delta Downs, we had a quarter horse race where 5 places were determined by a nose. Including one triple dead heat.

A triple dead heat is very rare, as you can blow up the picture pretty big to see seperation between the noses. This was the only one that I called in thousands of races. I will try to find the photo so that I can scan it and post it here.

October 23, 1981: El Lark Rise, One Way, I Will Be were the horses that finished in a triple dead heat in Lincoln. It took forever for the results to be posted. A special race was held 9 days later that matched the three horses. El Lark Rise beat One Way by a head. I Will Be was about a length back.

June 10, 1944 - Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. Brownie, Bossuet, and Wait A Bit dead-heated for WIN in what I believe is still the only triple dead heat for WIN in a STAKE RACE.

There was a triple dead-heat at Belmont in 1991... My oldest racing memory that I saw in person, I was 11, I remember having cut the photo out of the newspaper because Herb McCauley was one of my favorites.

Arlington early 90's saw one.

One day after winning the Preakness Stakes, jockey Pat Day shared in a triple dead heat victory Sunday - only the 18th in modern thoroughbred history - at Arlington International Racecourse. May 1990
