CHRB Advisory re 7th race Del Mar 7-21-11‏

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Horse Racing Board has completed its review of the error in posted payoffs for the 7th race at Del Mar on July 21, 2011. The review confirmed the initial report that this was due to an error by an employee of Sportech in the totalizator room at Del Mar, who entered an order of finish into the totalizator system different from the order entered by the stewards in the belief the stewards had entered the order incorrectly. Before cashing could be turned off and the payoffs corrected, tickets were cashed that resulted in underpayments to bettors of $1,063. Sportech is honoring all reasonable claims for underpayments.

In responding to this error, Sportech has implemented a new policy requiring authorization from a supervisor in similar situations. Furthermore, Sportech agreed to install a monitor at each California racetrack for the placing judges and stewards that will display “unofficial” prices, so when the totalizator room calculates prices, the stewards and placing judges will see a preview of those unofficial results and prices.

An employee of sportech thinks the stewards messed up the order of finish so he decides to enter his own without checking first with said stewards? WHAT?

Something here doesn't pass the smell test for me...

Seems that this employee should be updating his/her resume.....

Of course, it would smell a lot worse if there were overpayments.
Then, the employee in question would have some more explaining to do.

Strong indicator the system and process used has a lot chances to make mistakes. Read as "antiquated".
