Another article:

Among those sitting at the table were Scott McKeever of Huntington Beach (http://topics.signonsandiego.com/topics/Huntington_Beach,_California) and his wife Vanessa and trainer Paul Aguirre and his wife, Lisa. McKeever, who founded www.myhorseplayer.com, a gambling site he closed last August, won $1,109,920.80 for being the only person to pick the third through the eighth races at Del Mar. And he had 20 of the 85 consolation tickets, with each worth $4,386 for another $87,720. His total haul was $1,197,646, and after visiting the IRS (http://topics.signonsandiego.com/topics/Internal_Revenue_Service) window at the track, he left with a check for $900,000 and $770 in cash.

Great hit, but in examining the payoffs it would seem that someone else liked those last two bombs in the sequence. At $6.80, $43.40, and $49.40 the late pick 3 only paid $ 1038, which seems very low considering the odds. About double that payout would have been more like it, or even triple.
