Cougar attacks are no laughing matter, particularly for those of us that live in the West, and even more so in California, where there has long been a moratorium on hunting them, they are protected. Because of this protection, cougars have mostly lost their fear of humans. Another example of liberalism at work, the lefties thought that cougars are just big, cute, fuzzy kitties. I reside just a few miles away from the site of the 2004 Whiting Ranch killing. Most of the attacks on humans have been by cats that were young, starving, or otherwise in bad shape, if one notes the small size of the attacking animals. A cougar does not reach full maturity until age 4 or 5, at which time a tom will be 120-180 pounds, with a very occasional one going 200. The 140 pounds of the dead male is average for a mature tom cougar. Sad that he ended up that way after such a long journey. Predators are increasing their range, cougars and wolves are showing up in new places. Heads up you Easterners, a cougar may soon be coming to your neighborhood, and I do not mean the kind you run into in a New York or Jersey dive at 1:00 AM. :)

Cyclist killed by mounatin lion a few years ago in Orange County about ten miles from my house. For their size (150 lbs) they are amazingly strong.

That cat was a male not quite 2 yrs old. Depending on the source, he weighed either 110, 112, or 122 pounds. A mature tom of 150 pounds can kill a bull elk, and no dog alive would have even the slightest chance in a one on one fight against such an animal.

There have been hundreds of sighting here in Michigan. Despite overwhelming evidence the DNR in this state refuses to admit a native population. Aside from Cougars we have a serious Coyote problem in this state.

Coyotes all over northern Illinois as well. In fact Arlington Park is considered one of the culprits as supposedly quite a few live on the backside. No black bears yet but its only a matter of time. They are already in the southern parts of Wisky.
