View Full Version : Bob Stoops & Big 12; TOTAL Domination !!

Since Bob Stoops came on the scene he has ruled this conference, winning 7
of 12 titles . The closest competition has been Texas with 2 in that 12 year period. Texas has a total of 3 since the big 12's inception.
Mack Brown despite being a monster Recruiter, seems to under-achieve in this regard. His entire career shows a dirth of Championships, with a National Championship redeeming himself somewhat. How many Championships would he have without Vince Young? One? And they almost blew that one with a brainfart
with about 1 second left. My Husker in-laws are still mad about that one.
Even in years when they beat OU and have very good teams they seem to blow the big 12 title.
Bob does have a few problems. His record in National Championship games is 3-1. I'll take Bob with his 3 NC losses anyday. Of course Texas has given us a few problems, but he still has a winning record against them. The total collapse of the Longhorns last year (5-7) probably insures a winning record for at least a few years. They also managed to run off the Best Defensive coordinator they have had in the last 20 years.
Rivals almost always ranks Texas ahead of OU in recruiting (past 12 years),and we still hold a winning record against them in that period. Why?
Lots of reasons. I have noticed a bias in favor of Texas Football on the national scene in the Rivals rankings, but that only explains a little. Texas has
been outcoached in most of those games. Except for Muschamp at DC OU has had better coaching.

LOL. That is funny Elk, but I expected more from you. Is that all your response
is going to be ? Wrong section snide remarks. Tell me how Mack is going to kick OU's ass or something.

Nah, I won't say much (in this section) except you seem to have problems finding the correct section to post in. Seeing your t-shirt allegiance, it's not surprising
I'm going out on a limb here and say that you are another loud lunged t-shirt fan of a program whose University President once said to the Board of Regents of Ou "Gentlemen, I'm trying to build a university that the football team can be proud of".
He said that, out of frustration, at a meeting where he couldn't get the Board to discuss anything but football -during the Wilkerson yrs... Priorities, sooner. Check them.
And yes, I do love beating BigLossBig 4 of the past 6 years. And dominating OU in virtually every other sport.
I'm going to bed now, happy and satisfied. Thank you for bringing the subject up!

You are welcome Elk.
Hey Elk. Aren't you deflecting here ? We were talking football. The name is Wilkinson. W-i-l-k-i-n-s-o-n. I am interested in the Quarterback controversy down at Texas and was wondering about some of the rumors down there. Help a Sooner out. This series seems to go in streaks, so we will probably win another 5 in a row. I cannot tell you how glad I was to see Muschamp go to Florida. Your new DC cannot be nearly as good.

LSU would kick both of their asses
(why not? I'm a Fighting Tiger)
How many Nat'l Titles for Stoops?
Mack B?
Lesticles?
One each?

In fact, a few weeks from now Maddog shoud head a few miles south and ElK should head a few miles north and meet in Dallas.
That way you both can watch LSU hammer Oregon.
Then you can go home and tell your families that you've just seen the best football team that's gonna play in the state of Texas all season; college or pro.
The LSU Tigers.

If Les Miles keeps oversigning Players and lying about the reasons, he will be looking for a new job. Also his win loss record is not as good as Mack or Bob.
Against big 12 and big 8 teams the bowl record of LSU is pathetic.
College football is one big cesspool these days.

Their bowl record under Miles is very good (6-3) while Stoops is 6-6, including a loss to LSU and Saban in the BCS Champ Game.

While I'm a Sooner, born and bred, I'm not a Bob Stoops fan. He doesn't close. Growing up with the Sooners of the 50's/60's through the 70's/80's, us "old-timers" don't measure success by conference championships. Given the level of talent and scheduling, he should now have three national championships under his belt...at least.

Even Barry Switzer lost title games and games that would have put us in the NC
game. So did Bud Wilkinson. What makes you think he won't finish with more titles than either of these 2? I also think he is a bit more honest than Barry.I
am also an old-timer and I love Bob. He certainly runs a cleaner program than
Barry. While I really like Barry, and met him several times at OU while I worked there, he made a few horrendous mistakes. The Miami games that Barry lost
WERE for all practical purposes NC games.

College football is one big cesspool these days.
This is a fact. It was bad before 5-6 years ago, but is completely out of control now. Far less enjoyable.
You remember how big a UT nut I was, I'm sure. The (OU) Big Red Auto Scandal, The tOSU tatoo, car and cash scandal, the Rich Rodriguez circus, the Cam Newton fiasco....it's out of control now, and I don't see it getting any better any day soon

I work 5 minutes from Jerry's whorehouse off Division street....You couldn't pay me 1000 dollars to walk across the street and watch a game there.
As for LSU, the last time TEXAS played the (Nick Saban led) Tigers, the Horns won by something like 2 touchdowns...Even Chris Simms had a good game that day.
Not impressed.

no controversy. GG is the starter. McCoy or Wood will play some too.
With a new OC it all comes down to what QB fits the scheme. Harsin (boise st) has always had the QB under center as opposed to the spread. That doesn't suit GG well. Probably does Wood and McCoy moreso.
No doubt, GG is the most talented. Everyone has to wait n see how the offense plays to his skills.
The biggest problem has been the OL's run-blocking. New OL coach will help, but our first 2 choices turned the job down (WISC, Auburn's OL coaches). That's never a good sign
Lot of subjects about UT football to cover (muschamp's lack of interest in 2010, new OC, DC, S&C coach, Cleve Bryant's alleged lawsuit via gloria allred, etc), but the truth is this will be a year for evaluations - not rebuilding. Harsin and Diaz are going to have to spend 6-7 games to see who fits where, and who doesn't fit at all. No one on the Forty Acres expects much in 2011

Thanks for the info Elk. The rumor I heard and it was just a rumor, was that GG was badly out performed in the Spring game. I don't really want Texas to be bad(it is bad for the big 12-2) but of course I want OU to kick the crap out of them. I have always admired Mack, ever since he was an assistant under Switzer. I have relatives in Texas and they give me hell when Texas beats us. Texas A&M on the other hand seems to have the rudest fans in the world. Is it just me ? I predict an 8-4 record for Texas maybe better. I am of course familiar with the Boise St. Coach but not the DC. Diaz is a mystery to me, but I have a hard time believing he is as good as Muschamp.

anm fans are generally the best or 2nd best in football (Nebraska pre-2002'ish being the other top group of fans). The only University they're rude to, to my knowledge, is us. They hate TEXAS with a passion, mostly b/c of the PUF fund distributions. That hatred began pre 1910, but the PUF fund sent the nutgrabbers over the edge in envy.
One of my best friends is an Ou grad, fmr co worker. He contends anm's fan base is what he wishes for OU ....to be honest I wish anm's typical alum / booster / fan's good qualities could be had in Austin game in, game out.
Manny Diaz is young, made a name for himself at Miss State under Mullen. Very aggressive, uses speed to stop offenses. It's a short term fix, we have a lot of quick kids on D, but have to get more physical
Coach Boom wanted to leave for Florida after 2009. Meyer quit, then came back. I believe wholeheartedly UT denied his release to UF b/c of the recruiting haul we were in line for & wanted him to stay till Mack left..This is why Meyer came back to UF for one more yr, Muschamp wasn't given his outright release.....What ensued was a shitty and passionless job by Muschamp, completely the opposite of his first 2 seasons here.
He's a great DC, I wish him the best. I just wish that either we'd let him go after the Rose Bowl, or that since he had the clause in the pact to stay after 12/31 if he didn't give notice, that he'd have given 100% as a coach. He showed little emotion on the sideline last season. No one knew why until he left for Florida & some contract details were known.
Also it's known that coach Boom and Greg Davis had disagreements on how to gameplan, and apparently Major and Boom didn't get along after mid season...it was a damn soap opera. Mack did the right thing by cleaning house, he'll be gone in 2 yrs and wants this to play out to the university's advantage. No one expects much till 2012

I agree about the Nebraska fans being top notch, but I disagree about A&m.
I think OU fans are spoiled. I will not say that OU fans are better than Texas,
but OSU and A&m fans are down at the bottom with Colorado. Much of this is very subjective of course but in my contact with Texas fans in big D, most of them were polite. I would probably rate Texas and OU fans in the middle somewhere. The OU fan in this thread is not that rare, and many times they don't realize that nearly all fans at any achool would want a coach as good as Stoops. I believe good things are in store for Texas( too much talent to be anything else). That Texas Network thing scares me to death, no wonder ESPN is pro Texas.

We have too many bandwagon fans wearing burnt orange right now. Alot of those folks owned Miami garb in the early 90's, switched to USC in 2002 or so, then made the dash for orange when we won the MNC. I hate to say it but it's true.
We do have good, loyal fans overall, but a lot of the bandwagon jumpers embarass me. When Ark kicked our ass in the cotton in 99, the drunk sitting next to me jumped a hawg fan in front of him for doing the horns down sign. I didn't know the guy but while talking to him it was clear he wasn't exactly an orangeblood.
TEXAS and Ou have similar fan bases, imo. They're rabid when winning, get nasty when they're not. Coaches don't last long when they don't challenge for MNC's every few yrs. Tough job, HC at a top 10 program.
The TEXAS-Ou game brings the worst out of both fan bases. I don't know how many Red River shootout games you've been to, but there are always fights, or at least used to be. Really odd b/c you'll hear from Big8 teams how good UT fans treat visitors.
You know, come to think of it, I'll throw Michigan in there for a loyal, good fanbase. When we played them in the 04 Rose Bowl our people said they were a lot like Nebraska fans. Knowledgeable, friendly, and respected the game & the sport. Good folks I heard.
I saw where you guys were ranked #1 in a preseason poll. The schedule is in your favor, that's for sure. I don't know anyone in the Big 8+4-2 that is a legit top 10 other than OU unless anm finds its stride again.
Also, I agree on the CU fans. They're horrible. They're bad to everyone, but to NU in particular.

UCLA fans in particular ditched their baby blue for burnt orange after that sad day in 2006 :(
(Well, as a Texas fan, it was a great game for you.)

I guess that ass kicking they gave us last Sept was the payback..... :(
Funny story....our premier sportsradio station's mornng crew has an OU homer on it. He and another OU homer went to the rose bowl a few yrs ago when Ou played UCLA, the Bruins spanked the Sooners, hard.
The radio guy, on his show, said that after the game & walking down the concourse & aisles of the rose bowl to get back to the ground level, you cross eyesight paths w/ the folks walking down on different tiers.....one after another, UCLA fans would giggle at him and his buddy decked out in Ou gear, looking sad - like they just lost their favorite dog... they come across one 20 yo kid, likely a student. The kid presses his face against the chain link fence and yells "And we don't even CARE about football !!!".
