Has anyone got one of these for supposedly downloading illegally? It's a notice that your isp was subpeonad to give up names of ip address holders. My girlfriend has gotten about 3 of these saying she illegally downloaded something ex. July 30th 2010 7;30 am. I'm wondering what other people are doing. She contacted a lawyer and he said $1500 to resolve it or 150k fine.???. Seems like a scam but not sure.

Was she downloading recent popular music or movies? Here's a site that keeps people informed on all the lawsuits but it might be a bit overwhelming in the beginning.

This a done deal. If it wasn't against the law I would advise you to throw her hard drive in the nearest body of water or deep deep lake.

But I wouldn't do that......that would be destroying evidence......you know what I mean? It would be against the law...........so really, don't do that. ......

It's probably a scam right? But where did they get the ISP info and the ip address from.......? Hmmmmm..... Interesting case

Can you contact your ISP about this? Maybe the ISP info was captured by spyware.

I don't know about ISPs, but industry groups have been sending people cease-and-desist letters for this kind of thing for years. In general, you just write them a letter that says I don't know what you are talking about, other people use my connection or maybe my wifi wasn't secure, etc etc and then make sure you don't have any such more downloading from your account. Coffee shops and people that offer free wifi get letters like that all the time...

You failed to mention if she has been downloading pirated material.

Legal threats within this world are commonplace:

Hard to feel sorry for those lost royalties from over-paid artists.
Pretty far down on my list of things to worry about.
Lots of other laws are being broken, so buck up, you poor slobs. Boo hoo hoo.

I definitely wouldn't ignore the letter that is really BAD advice. Read all this stuff and decide for yourself. Let me say Ralph is a smart man and leave it at that. Here is some info on the firm that sent you the letter.

This is how the legal document looks from the firm. It has lots of Internet Protocol Addresses listed.

Now for the semi good news. I remember reading somewhere that a judge threw out a lot of the addresses listed because it was out of his jurisdiction. Here's a few but I'm not sure if its' the one I read.

Lastly try contacting this organization they used to do really good work in this area. Haven't heard much about them lately worth a call or an email.
